He also addressed how his comments about the killing had been received: “It was never my intention to make light of the murder of a young man.” Kimmel said he understood why viewers who thought he had pointed a finger at the suspect were upset. He added: “I don’t think the murderer who shot Charlie Kirk represents anyone. This was a sick person who believed violence was a solution and it isn’t.” The Los Angeles Times reported that he acknowledged some people considered his earlier remarks ill-timed or unclear, but did not explicitly apologize in this monologue.
Why was Jimmy Kimmel Live! suspended?
The dispute began with Kimmel’s September 15 monologue about reactions to Charlie Kirk’s killing. The Associated Press reported that Kimmel criticized people he said were trying to politicize the killing and quoted his characterization of the “MAGA Gang.”

On September 17, ABC announced an indefinite preemption. The decision followed public comments by FCC Chair Brendan Carr and announcements by affiliate owners Nexstar and Sinclair that their stations would not air the program. ABC did not immediately give a direct reason when it announced the suspension, according to the Associated Press and ABC News.
Carr said there was a “path forward for suspension” and that the FCC would have “remedies” to consider, ABC News reported. The AP reported that he warned the network and local affiliates could face repercussions if Kimmel was not punished; Carr later denied threatening to revoke station licenses. These reports do not establish that the FCC formally ordered ABC to suspend the show.
What explanation did Disney give for bringing the show back?
On September 22, Disney announced that the program would return the next day. Its statement, reproduced by ABC News, said the suspension was intended “to avoid further inflaming a tense situation at an emotional moment for our country.” Disney said it made the decision because it felt some comments were “ill-timed and thus insensitive,” and that it chose to return the show after “thoughtful conversations” with Kimmel.
That is Disney’s stated rationale; it should not be read as proof that it was the only factor behind the suspension or reversal.

Was Jimmy Kimmel Live! back on every ABC station?
No—not immediately. Although ABC reinstated the program for its September 23 broadcast, Nexstar and Sinclair initially continued to preempt it on their affiliates. ABC News reported on September 26 that both companies had ended their preemptions. Thus, the network’s return announcement and local station carriage were separate steps.
Where could viewers watch the episode?
At the time, ABC News reported that full episodes were available the next day on Hulu and Disney+, with clips posted to YouTube. It also mentioned Hulu + Live TV. Streaming catalogs and local carriage can change, so that September 2025 availability report is not a guarantee that the episode is available on those services now.
