In a season-seven interview, creator Rob McElhenney described the goal as “literally deconstructing the sitcom.” The series is still running: FX identifies season 18 as its current season and lists it as a 10-episode season.
A sitcom built to reset, not grow
Many sitcoms draw momentum from characters changing over time. It’s Always Sunny takes the opposite route: the members of the gang are driven by self-interest, and their schemes tend to return them to the same sorry position. That recurring reset gives the writers a durable source of conflict. They can devise new plans, alliances and rivalries without needing the characters to learn lasting lessons.
In a season-seven interview with Daily Actor, McElhenney described the ambition as “to try and do what’s not being done on television, and literally deconstructing the sitcom.” He said the team had tried to move away from the usual effort to make sitcom characters as lovable and likable as possible. These were his comments at that point in the show’s run, not a new statement about the current season.
Critic Paula Mejía’s 2026 New Yorker feature offers a complementary explanation for why the show’s transgressions can work as satire: the gang is not rewarded for its behavior. Mejía quotes actor and executive producer Glenn Howerton: “I think we get away with it because the characters are never rewarded.” Howerton adds, “They’re always losing. They always wind up in the same place they started in.” The joke’s target is the characters’ moral bankruptcy, not a model for success.

How the show learned to make itself
The show’s hands-on beginnings fit its unconventional creative approach. Mejía reports that McElhenney, Glenn Howerton and Charlie Day made an early tape with inexpensive digital camcorders, taking both acting and behind-the-camera roles. FX executives liked the humor but found the original Los Angeles setting—where the characters were actors—familiar. The creators shifted the setting to Philadelphia.
According to the New Yorker, the first season was produced for $450,000 per episode. FX valued the low cost even as the show faced lukewarm reviews and middling ratings. That modest starting point gave the creators room to develop a distinctive format within a network willing to back edgy, inexpensive original programming.

McElhenney also described a practical writing and filming process in the season-seven interview. The team would generally try a fully scripted take or two before improvising, changing scenes and shaping the final result in editing. He said the production became more collaborative over time, with more responsibility delegated and directors brought further into the process.
A manageable episode load and a quality test
In that same interview, McElhenney said the show had made between seven and fifteen episodes in a season up to that point, fewer than the 22 or 24 episodes he associated with a typical sitcom season. He thought the smaller volume helped the show avoid getting old. This was a season-seven observation, not a description of every later season.

He also framed continuation as a creative decision rather than an automatic entitlement. The team would ask whether a new episode was as good as or better than the previous season and whether viewers were still watching. If the answer to the quality question became no, he said, they would have to consider wrapping up; if it remained yes, they would continue. FX currently describes season 18 as ten episodes.
FX support and new ways to find viewers
Creative design alone does not explain a long run. The New Yorker describes FX chief John Landgraf’s support for the show as part of a broader push toward edgy, low-cost original programming. FX also released the series on DVD and expanded marketing toward college students. After Hulu’s public launch in 2008, the show found a niche audience there, according to Mejía’s account.

That combination matters: a production that could be made economically had a network willing to keep it on the schedule, while DVD and streaming offered viewers more ways to discover or revisit it. These are contributing conditions, not proof that any one platform or promotional decision caused the show’s longevity. The New Yorker reports that by season count, It’s Always Sunny had become the longest-running live-action comedy in American television history. The article compares its run with The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet, which had 14 seasons. This is a season-count comparison; definitions of “sitcom” and “longest-running” can vary.

Longevity should not be confused with universal acclaim or awards dominance. Mejía notes that the show began with lukewarm reviews and middling ratings and reports three Emmy nominations, all for stunt coordination, with no wins. Its record is therefore less a story of uninterrupted critical or awards consensus than one of a repeatable comic premise, support from its network and opportunities for audiences to find it.
