In “Smallfolk,” Rhaenyra and Mysaria grow closer as Mysaria offers the queen both political counsel and personal reassurance. Their vulnerable exchange ends in a kiss, but an urgent report cuts the moment short. Spoilers ahead for Season 2, Episode 6.
How Mysaria becomes more than an informant
“Smallfolk,” the sixth episode of House of the Dragon Season 2, aired July 21, 2024. Rhaenyra is facing doubts about her position and growing isolation from allies. Mysaria helps her navigate the political moment, but her importance to the queen is no longer limited to intelligence: she offers strategic support when Rhaenyra needs someone to take her concerns seriously. The Washington Post’s July 22 recap describes Mysaria’s role in the episode as both political and personal: read the recap.
What Rhaenyra and Mysaria share
Rhaenyra eventually confides that she fears Daemon has turned against her. Mysaria answers with a painful account of her own past: her father abused her, impregnated her, and left her scarred and unable to have children, as recounted by TVLine’s episode recap. The disclosure is not simply backstory. In the scene, Mysaria uses what she has survived to explain why she recognizes Rhaenyra’s vulnerability, then tells her she believes the queen is steadfast and meant to rule.
Rhaenyra responds by embracing her. The embrace becomes a kiss, linking an intimate moment of comfort with the trust and political commitment that have been growing between them. The scene is interrupted by news that Seasmoke has been seen with a rider, pulling Rhaenyra back into the crisis around her claim.

What Sonoya Mizuno says about the kiss
Sonoya Mizuno, who plays Mysaria, told TheWrap that “It wasn’t scripted as a kiss.” She said Emma D’Arcy suggested that Rhaenyra comfort Mysaria with an embrace after the disclosure, and that the embrace developed into the kiss. Mizuno described the result as emotionally organic, connecting the characters through empathy and their shared experience of being outsiders. Read Mizuno’s interview with TheWrap.
That account distinguishes the scene’s development from the broader idea of a romance. In another interview, Mizuno said the showrunners had discussed a potential romance between the characters before filming, while the precise intimate action in this scene was settled collaboratively later. The kiss being unplanned in its specific form does not mean the possibility of romance had never been considered. Mizuno discusses the relationship with Swooon.

Can Rhaenyra trust Mysaria?
The episode gives Mysaria meaningful reasons to support Rhaenyra, including her belief in fighting for the smallfolk. But it does not settle whether her political commitment and personal affection are entirely selfless, or how her history with Daemon may shape her choices. Mizuno calls Mysaria “an opportunist, not in a pejorative sense,” describing a survivor who makes use of the chances available to her. She also leaves room for viewers to judge the character’s motives for themselves.
That ambiguity matters: Mysaria can be both strategically minded and genuinely empathetic. The episode depicts her offering Rhaenyra counsel, sharing her trauma, and affirming the queen’s right to rule; it does not establish what the kiss will mean for their relationship or what Mysaria will do next.
