In “The Red Dragon and the Gold,” the fourth episode of House of the Dragon Season 2, Rhaenys and Meleys defend Rook’s Rest against the Greens. The battle ends with the Blacks losing both rider and dragon, while King Aegon is found badly injured and Aemond’s intentions remain unclear.
What happens before the battle at Rook’s Rest?
The episode sets two fronts of the widening conflict. Daemon’s effort to secure support in the Riverlands is stalled at Harrenhal, where visions unsettle him. Meanwhile, Criston Cole leads the Green campaign toward Rook’s Rest. The castle’s defenders face a threat that will soon draw dragons into the fight.
How does the battle at Rook’s Rest unfold?
Rhaenys arrives on Meleys to defend the castle. Aegon then joins the battle aboard Sunfyre. Meleys initially gains the upper hand against the king’s dragon, but Aemond’s arrival on Vhagar transforms the fight. The Washington Post’s recap describes the shift in the battle when Vhagar enters the contest (The Washington Post, July 7, 2024).
Rhaenys has an opportunity to withdraw. Instead, she turns back to engage Vhagar. Director Alan Taylor said he was focused on Rhaenys’s fate and how she handled it, identifying her decision to return as the battle’s crucial moment (The A.V. Club, July 8, 2024).

Does Rhaenys die? What happens to Meleys?
Yes. Rhaenys and Meleys die in the battle. Their deaths are the Blacks’ immediate and profound loss: Rhaenys chooses to face Vhagar rather than escape, and both she and her dragon are lost in the clash.
What happens to Aegon and Sunfyre?
Aegon and Sunfyre fall during the fighting. Cole later finds the king near his dragon, badly injured. The episode does not resolve Aegon’s fitness to rule or what his injury will mean for the Greens.

Aemond is also present at the scene, with his sword drawn. That final image leaves the viewer unsure what he intends to do. Showrunner Ryan Condal described Aegon as collateral damage in the attack, but the episode itself closes on the uncertainty surrounding the king and Aemond’s actions (TheWrap, July 7, 2024).
Who wins the battle—and what does it cost?
The Greens take the field at Rook’s Rest, but the outcome is not a simple victory. Rhaenys and Meleys are dead, and Aegon—the king whose side has prevailed—is gravely compromised. Aemond’s presence at the end adds a question of succession and loyalty to the battlefield’s physical losses.

The fight also marks a major escalation: the contest is no longer only about taking a castle. It has become a direct confrontation between dragonriders, with the fate of the king and the balance of power among the Greens suddenly uncertain.
