Horizon: An American Saga — Chapter 1 is a roughly three-hour opening to a planned western saga, and its patient pace can make the journey feel longer than its landscape-filled images suggest. Reviews describe an expansive ensemble of intersecting stories, not a self-contained plot with a neat ending. That scale gives the film room for atmosphere and character, but also leaves viewers waiting for storylines to develop and pay off.
How long is Horizon: An American Saga — Chapter 1?
A June 27, 2024 excerpt attributed to Entertainment Weekly describes the film as roughly three hours long. That is an approximate runtime reported in the review excerpt, not an official runtime listing. Gabriel Dumont’s September 28, 2024 review likewise describes an unhurried film, with substantial dialogue as well as action.
Why can the film feel slow?
It takes time to establish its world
Dumont reads the film’s tempo as patient and its approach as reminiscent of classic western filmmaking. Rather than drive toward one compact central conflict, the movie introduces multiple perspectives and lets its strands intersect across the larger saga. That breadth can suit viewers who enjoy watching a fictional world take shape, but it also means the film spends time setting up people and situations before offering resolution.
Some scenes and relationships do not gather momentum
The Entertainment Weekly excerpt is less forgiving: it criticizes slow patches and says relationships and storylines can feel underdeveloped or unresolved. The tension between these views is central to the experience. A deliberate pace can create space for atmosphere, but when a scene does not deepen a character or move a storyline forward, that patience may register as drag.

Does Chapter 1 tell a complete story?
Not in the conventional, fully contained sense suggested by a standalone western. Dumont identifies it as the first of four planned installments and describes several storylines that intersect across the saga. The chapter’s open threads are therefore part of its structure, though that explanation will not necessarily satisfy a viewer looking for a complete dramatic payoff within this film. The critical question is whether the setup itself feels rewarding enough to justify the unresolved arcs.
What works best?
The western landscape
The reviews point to scenery as a notable strength. Dumont emphasizes the film’s classic-western sensibility, while the Entertainment Weekly excerpt praises the scenery. The landscapes offer the story visual scale even when its plotting moves slowly.
Rank #2
The score and atmosphere
The same Entertainment Weekly excerpt praises the music. Alongside the scenery and the film’s measured tempo, the score contributes to an atmosphere that may appeal to viewers who value setting and mood as much as tightly paced plot.
Who is likely to enjoy it?
- Consider watching if you like expansive westerns, patient world-building, intersecting character threads, and scenery-led atmosphere.
- Temper expectations if you want a brisk narrative, a single dominant storyline, or a satisfying resolution to every major thread by the end.
- Expect a trade-off: the film’s scale and mood are part of its appeal, while its length and unresolved setup are the main reasons it may feel like a long wait for a payoff.
What about Chapter 2?
A personal blog review dated October 15, 2024 reported that Chapter 2’s release date had been pushed back indefinitely at that time, after a lukewarm response to the first film. That is a dated account, not a reliable statement of the chapter’s current release plans or availability. The reviews cited here do not establish the present status of later installments.
