Spoilers for “Grounded,” Season 2, Episode 10. Morgan is fired after disobeying orders to stay out of an active murder investigation—but she helps solve it before the night is over, and Selena Soto gets her reinstated. The episode makes Morgan’s rule-breaking costly without letting the department’s leadership conflicts off the hook.
What happens in “Grounded”?
“Grounded” is listed by ABC as Season 2, Episode 10, with a runtime of 43:03 and a TV-14 rating. ABC dates the episode January 21, 2026, while Rotten Tomatoes and two recap articles use January 20, a one-day discrepancy in listings. ABC’s official synopsis sets up the other major thread: “Wagner and Soto’s leadership conflict comes to a head.”
The case begins after a group of skydivers land safely and discover that their instructor, Air Force veteran Alonso Padilla, has died during his descent. Investigators find a threatening note in his jumpsuit—“I know what you’re doing. Stop or die”—and a blank key card. The initial medical finding is puzzling: Padilla died from lack of oxygen, even though his helmet and mask appear to have worked.
Why is Morgan sent to detective training?
Morgan’s attempt to speed up the autopsy becomes the disciplinary trigger. The rushed order costs the department $12,000, and Internal Affairs sends her to mandatory detective training with Sgt. Dottie Reynolds. Until Morgan passes, she is barred from the active case.

Reynolds sees Morgan’s unusual ability to connect evidence, but Morgan does not respect the boundary. Wagner uses Karadec to relay information to her, and Morgan later uses a training exercise as cover to inspect case information. The episode makes the contradiction plain: Morgan’s instincts can help the investigation, but she is knowingly continuing after being told to stop.
How does Morgan help solve Padilla’s murder?
The clues point toward Padilla’s work with military test pilots and a concealed problem involving their health and aircraft life-support systems. Engineer Ramsay Pike knew about a dangerous defect. Morgan identifies how the murder was carried out: Pike altered Padilla’s oxygen-mask valve so carbon dioxide could not escape. Laboratory evidence and video placing Pike at the skydiving facility support the case against him.

The defect had already endangered other pilots, giving the murder a wider consequence than one victim. Morgan’s deduction helps bring that danger into focus, but the episode does not present her success as permission to ignore orders without consequences.
Does Morgan lose her job?
Yes—at first. Reynolds describes Morgan as disruptive but says her abilities could be useful with close supervision. Internal Affairs agent Solomon rejects that recommendation and fires her for insubordination. TVLine reports Solomon telling her, “Your insubordination isn’t quirk, Morgan, it’s a liability.”

Morgan believes she has until the next day before the termination is processed, so she joins the team for one last night and helps identify Pike. Soto then confronts Solomon with compromising photographs and secures Morgan’s reinstatement. She tells Morgan that she still has a job.
What changes between Soto and Wagner?
Soto’s dispute with Wagner is about authority as much as Morgan. Soto says Wagner has repeatedly taken over her cases and undermined her team. She demands respect for her and her people; TVLine quotes her telling Wagner, “As long as I sit in that chair, you will treat me and my team with the respect that we deserve… or you can fire my a*s, too.” Wagner does not apologize for involving Morgan, but later backs Soto’s move against Solomon.

Karadec also presses Wagner about why he was moved out of field work and who compelled him to accept the captain role. That question remains unresolved, leaving the episode’s leadership tension open even as Morgan’s immediate employment crisis is settled.

The episode’s central tension is not simply whether Morgan is brilliant enough to get away with disobedience. Wagner’s decision to keep feeding her case information can look like support for her talent, but it also exposes her to discipline while he remains in a position of authority. Morgan chooses to keep working despite a clear restriction, and the firing makes that choice matter.

Soto’s intervention protects Morgan and challenges Solomon’s decision, but using compromising photographs raises its own ethical question. The episode restores Morgan’s job without making every choice around her seem clean—or resolving whether the department can value her abilities while setting workable limits.
