Spoilers throughout. Vincent’s apparent recovery and final speech in His Three Daughters are not happening in waking reality. They unfold in his dying mind, giving him an imagined chance to affirm all three daughters—including Rachel—and give his family the words he had not said. After Vincent dies, the sisters begin to reconnect through an apology, a lullaby and a shared joke.
Is Vincent’s final speech real?
No. Vincent appears to revive, asks to move to his favorite chair and reads his own obituary. As he speaks lovingly about his children and home, the scene reveals that he is still in the armchair, with his daughters gathered around him in tears. Netflix Tudum’s September 20, 2024 ending explainer identifies the speech as a vision in Vincent’s dying mind, not a literal recovery: Netflix Tudum’s ending explanation.

The vision gives Vincent an imagined opportunity to express what his daughters need to hear. Writer-director Azazel Jacobs told Tudum that his experience of being with family and friends at the end of life had made time feel as though it moved “in inexplicable ways.” That comment offers context for the film’s shifting sense of time, rather than a claim that the scene depicts a specific medical experience.
Does Vincent die in His Three Daughters?
Yes. In reality, Vincent dies peacefully in the apartment. The apparent revival and speech are part of the dying-mind vision; the film then turns to the sisters’ response to his death. Netflix’s official synopsis describes the story as unfolding over three volatile days, while Jacobs’s comments in the ending explainer refer to three and a half days. “A few days” captures the film’s compressed, stretched sense of time without implying a more exact duration. Is Rachel Vincent’s biological daughter?
No. Katie and Christina are Vincent’s daughters with one mother; Rachel is his stepdaughter from his later marriage. But the film’s emotional question is not whether Rachel shares Vincent’s blood. It is whether the family will recognize the bond she has built with him and her place among the sisters.
That question comes to a head when Katie’s accusation makes Rachel feel that she counts for less because she is not related to Vincent by blood. In the imagined speech, Vincent affirms Rachel as his daughter just as much as Katie and Christina. The vision answers the wound directly, even though it cannot change the fact that Vincent has died.

Why do Katie and Rachel start to reconcile?
Katie apologizes and says she hopes Rachel will stay in the apartment so it can remain in the family. The gesture matters because Rachel has been caring for Vincent while also having to defend her right to belong. The sisters do not suddenly become alike or settle every grievance; the film shows them making room for one another after the fight.
The actors’ comments support these as character readings, not diagnoses. Natasha Lyonne described Rachel as the sister who is “genuinely showing up the most for our father,” despite being judged by “imagined or constructed metrics” of success. Carrie Coon said she understood Katie’s wish to control everything as an illusion of control in a situation where she had none. Those perspectives help explain the sisters’ clash: Rachel’s care is undervalued, while Katie’s practical authority cannot protect her from loss. Both comments appear in Netflix Tudum’s interview and ending analysis.

What do the lullaby and “crazy little ducks” mean?
After Vincent’s death, Christina sings a lullaby. Later, Rachel recalls the “crazy little ducks” joke that Katie completed during the song. The callback gives the sisters a shared laugh and recalls Rachel’s proposed obituary joke about Vincent having “raised a few crazy bitches.” Grief has not disappeared, but they can again share a moment rather than only trade accusations.
Rachel still goes outside to sit on a bench and take in the New York air. The difference is that she is no longer being pushed out by Katie’s complaints. The ending treats connection as compatible with distinct personalities and a need for space, not as proof that the sisters’ differences have vanished.

What does the ending mean?
The ending can be read as an imagined act of acceptance: Vincent gives Rachel the affirmation she has been denied and gives all three daughters a moment of family closeness. It can also be read as the film visualizing the words relatives wish they could hear at the end of a life. Those are interpretations of the scene; the film does not establish that Vincent consciously delivered the speech in waking life.
A separate critical comparison comes from Le Monde, which relates the family story to Chekhov’s Three Sisters. That is a critic’s parallel, not evidence that Jacobs’s film adapts the play. Le Monde’s review.

The final joke offers the film’s modest measure of change: Katie, Christina and Rachel can begin to recognize their bond without becoming one another or resolving grief all at once.
