The original Happy Gilmore arrived in 1996; its follow-up, Happy Gilmore 2, came nearly three decades later. Adam Sandler, Christopher McDonald and Julie Bowen connect the two films, but the sequel is not a full-cast reunion: it brings back familiar characters while adding new performers, and several original cast members had died before it was made.
Where is the Happy Gilmore cast now?
The most useful way to compare the cast is to look at who returned for the sequel and who is remembered from the 1996 original. The available cast information establishes the key original roles, the central returning performers, and several cast members who died before the follow-up; it does not establish a complete, current career timeline for every supporting actor.
| Performer | Role in the 1996 film | Connection to Happy Gilmore 2 | Status by the sequel |
|---|---|---|---|
| Adam Sandler | Happy Gilmore | Returns as a central performer | Returned |
| Christopher McDonald | Shooter McGavin | Returns as a central performer | Returned |
| Julie Bowen | Virginia Venit | Returns as a central performer | Returned |
| Bob Barker | Appeared as himself | Died before the sequel | Died before the sequel |
| Carl Weathers | Chubbs Peterson | Died before the sequel | Died before the sequel |
| Frances Bay | Grandma Gilmore | Died before the sequel | Died before the sequel |
| Richard Kiel | Original cast member; a role is not specified in the cited retrospective | Died before the sequel | Died before the sequel |
| Joe Flaherty | Original cast member; a role is not specified in the cited retrospective | Died before the sequel | Died before the sequel |
Universal Pictures’ original-film listing names Sandler, McDonald, Bowen, Bay, Weathers, Barker and other cast members, including Allen Covert, Robert Smigel, Lee Trevino and Kevin Nealon. The Associated Press retrospective also identifies Kiel and Flaherty among the original cast. The sequel’s official Netflix cast guide describes a mix of returning characters and new faces.
Which stars connect the original to Happy Gilmore 2?
Adam Sandler as Happy Gilmore
Sandler leads both films as the title character. His return provides the clearest link between the 1996 comedy and the follow-up, but the sources cited here do not establish a full account of his career between the two releases.

Which original cast members died before the sequel?
The AP’s July 23, 2025 retrospective reports that Bob Barker, Carl Weathers, Frances Bay, Richard Kiel and Joe Flaherty had died before Happy Gilmore 2. Their roles in the original ranged from Barker’s appearance as himself, Weathers’s Chubbs Peterson and Bay’s Grandma Gilmore to the other supporting performances identified by the AP.
The AP says the sequel acknowledges some of the original cast members who died. That supports describing the film as recognizing some of them, not claiming that every performer receives the same tribute or that every death is addressed in the same way.

Was Happy Gilmore 2 a full-cast reunion?
No. Netflix frames the sequel as a return for familiar characters alongside new faces, rather than a complete reunion of everyone from the original. Some performers came back, while the five cast members named above had died before the follow-up. Netflix’s cast guide provides the official overview of the sequel’s returning and new performers.
