Released March 31, 2025, it follows the Gilgo Beach investigation through the victims, their families and the police response. The series predates the later legal outcome: Netflix reported that Rex Heuermann pleaded guilty to eight murders in April 2026 and was sentenced in June 2026.
What is Gone Girls about?
The documentary revisits the investigation that began with a search for a missing woman on Long Island in 2010 and the discovery of multiple unidentified bodies. It focuses not only on the crimes and the investigation, but on the victims and the relatives who pressed authorities and the public to pay attention.
Netflix describes the series as examining how stigma around sex work may have contributed to delayed attention to the women’s cases. That is the documentary’s framing, not a finding attributed here to an independent inquiry. Garbus has emphasized the families’ advocacy: “These family members were never going to give up. These women knew that there was a need to shake [up] the establishment to get attention for this case.”
The series also addresses institutional failures, including a police corruption scandal that affected the investigation. Its perspective is that of a documentary released in 2025; it does not include the subsequent 2026 plea and sentence.

Episode guide
Netflix’s UK listing describes three parts, with runtimes totaling 158 minutes. The total is calculated from the runtimes shown on that listing.
| Episode | Runtime | Investigative stage and focus |
|---|---|---|
| Part One | 49 minutes | The 2010 search for a missing woman leads to the discovery of multiple unidentified bodies. |
| Part Two | 56 minutes | The search for Shannan Gilbert resumes amid a corruption scandal affecting the investigation. |
| Part Three | 53 minutes | An overlooked tip leads to the 2023 arrest; the episode description says the investigation connected the suspect to additional homicides over two decades. |
These are Netflix’s episode descriptions, not a complete accounting of all cases associated with the broader Gilgo Beach investigation. Netflix’s UK catalog listing provides the episode details, runtimes and regional audio and subtitle information; availability can vary by region and change over time.
Who is Rex Heuermann, and what is the latest case status?
Netflix reported on June 17, 2026, that Rex Heuermann pleaded guilty on April 8, 2026, to murdering eight women: Megan Waterman, Melissa Barthelemy, Amber Lynn Costello, Maureen Brainard-Barnes, Valerie Mack, Jessica Taylor, Sandra Costilla and Karen Vergata. The same report says he was sentenced on June 17 to multiple life terms without parole under the plea deal. These are the legal developments reported by Netflix; the documentary itself was released before them.
The plea does not mean every disappearance or death associated with the wider investigation has been resolved. Netflix’s June 2026 report says some remains remain unidentified. It also reports that police identified Jane Doe No. 3 and a toddler in April 2025 as Tanya Denise Jackson and Tatiana Marie Dykes. The series and the later case update should therefore be read as covering distinct points in time, not as a complete resolution of every case connected with Gilgo Beach.
For the dated legal update and Garbus’s comments, see Netflix’s June 17, 2026 article.

Robert Kolker’s Lost Girls: An Unsolved American Mystery is useful background for readers who want a nonfiction account connected to Garbus’s earlier work. Netflix says Garbus’s earlier film Lost Girls was based on Kolker’s book. That does not make the book a direct adaptation or official companion to the 2025 series Gone Girls.
Netflix’s series article discusses that connection. Its Media Center logline characterizes the case as unsolved for 13 years before the July 2023 break; that is Netflix’s description of the timeline, not a separate statistical finding.
