Gladiator II gives Paul Mescal the imposing, arena-ready presence its cheeky “biblical thirst trap” framing promises. But the sequel works best when Ridley Scott turns that physical spectacle into kinetic action—and less well when its tangled politics crowd out character and emotional stakes. Denzel Washington, playing the calculating Macrinus, is the film’s most consistently vivid presence.
What is Gladiator II about?
Ridley Scott’s sequel follows Lucius, played by Paul Mescal, after his home is conquered and he is forced into the Colosseum. The story moves from the arena toward Rome’s contests for power, making Lucius’s survival part of a larger struggle over who controls the empire. Paramount describes it as a saga of power, intrigue and vengeance. Paramount Pictures’ film page lists Mescal alongside Pedro Pascal, Joseph Quinn, Fred Hechinger, Lior Raz, Derek Jacobi, Connie Nielsen and Denzel Washington.
Does the spectacle deliver?
It does. Scott gives the arena sequences scale and momentum, and the action is the sequel’s clearest source of pleasure. The set pieces have visual command rather than feeling like a string of interchangeable fights; the Colosseum remains a place where public entertainment and political power meet. The Associated Press calls the movie a “swaggering, sword-and-sandal epic” that “prizes the need to entertain above all else.” That description captures its priorities: Jake Coyle’s AP review rates it three stars out of four.
Mescal’s physical presence belongs to that visual design. He looks credible as a man made to fight for survival, and the camera knows how to frame him as both an imposing figure and a spectacle for the crowd. The joke in the title is useful as a first impression, not a full verdict: the film’s appeal is not simply that Mescal looks good in armor. His body makes Lucius legible as an arena hero, while the role asks him to carry a much larger epic.

Where does the sequel lose momentum?
The plot is busier and less direct than the original’s. Rome’s shifting alliances and court maneuvering give the story scale, but they also make it harder to stay close to Lucius. The Atlantic praises Scott’s visual control and Washington’s performance while finding the sequel’s plot more tangled and its characterization thinner than the first film’s. The Atlantic’s review identifies the central tradeoff: spectacle remains compelling, but the human drama does not always keep pace.
That imbalance limits the emotional force of the action. The film gives Lucius reasons to fight, but its many political currents can dilute the personal stakes that ought to make each contest matter. Mescal makes a convincing transition into an epic lead; the screenplay gives him less room to turn that scale into a consistently deep portrait.

Why is Denzel Washington such a standout?
Washington’s Macrinus is a shrewd operator who understands that influence can be won as much through performance and manipulation as through force. He brings an appetite for mischief to the court politics, giving the intrigue a human center even when the plot grows crowded. The Atlantic singles out his gleefully manipulative turn, and the AP’s review also foregrounds Washington in its headline. He is not a substitute for a clearer story, but his performance makes the story’s power games more entertaining to watch.
Is Gladiator II worth watching?
Yes, if you want a large-scale historical action film and are willing to accept a less focused story than the original. Scott’s arena spectacle, Mescal’s commanding physical transformation and Washington’s magnetic schemer make the sequel engaging; its crowded plotting and thinner characterization keep it from matching the dramatic clarity it reaches for. Rotten Tomatoes’ displayed review excerpts reflect both sides—praise for performances and fights, alongside reservations about the story and comparisons with the first film—but those selected excerpts are not a representative audience survey. Rotten Tomatoes’ review page is best read as a collection of individual critical responses, not a measure of what all viewers think.

Running time and rating
The Associated Press lists the film at 148 minutes and rated R for strong bloody violence. Those details make it a long, violent theatrical epic rather than a light adventure; viewers sensitive to graphic combat should factor in the rating.
