Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein is an unusually natural match between director and material: Mary Shelley’s creator, creature and fractured family speak directly to his long-standing interest in monsters and human vulnerability. But that fit is not a guarantee of cinematic success. Justin Chang’s review in The New Yorker argues that the film’s lavish conception is undercut by flat, conspicuously digital imagery and a scale that sits awkwardly with Netflix-first viewing. The strongest case for the film is its emotional reframing; the question mark is how fully its visual spectacle serves that frame.
Why this story fits del Toro—and why that is not the whole verdict
Del Toro has said he wanted to tell Shelley’s story since childhood. In Netflix’s official feature about the film, he describes his relationship to the novel this way: “I lived with Mary Shelley’s creation all my life. For me, it’s the Bible.” That lifelong attachment helps explain why this adaptation feels personal rather than merely dutiful. It also gives the film a clear interpretive center: the Creature is not just the consequence of Victor Frankenstein’s experiment, but the child of a creator who cannot take responsibility for what he has made.
Del Toro says, “The backbone of it became a story about a father and a son and what it is to become a father after being a son.” That emphasis connects creation to inheritance: Victor is shaped by an abusive father and loss, then repeats damage in his relationship with the Creature. Oscar Isaac, who plays Victor, describes “the pain and the damage that continues as a cycle” as a major theme. The adaptation’s most compelling question, then, is not simply what happens when a human tries to play God. It is whether someone who has been harmed can stop passing that harm on.
This is a strong fit for a filmmaker drawn to outsiders, aberrant children and the tension between monstrosity and tenderness. Yet a director’s affinity for a story cannot settle whether the film’s images and dramatic choices work. Chang’s assessment in The New Yorker is the necessary counterweight: he sees an elaborate visual world but finds that it can look oddly flat and overtly digital. The evidence supports a persuasive match of sensibilities, not an unqualified success.

What the adaptation puts at its emotional center
Victor as a son who becomes a father
The film’s family lens makes Victor’s failures feel less like an abstract warning about scientific ambition and more like a pattern of cruelty and neglect. Del Toro’s description of Victor is pointed: “Like all tyrants, he believes himself to be a victim.” The line frames his self-pity as part of the danger. His suffering may help explain him, but it does not excuse what he does to the Creature.
The Creature as a person seeking recognition
Elizabeth recognizes promise in the Creature where Victor sees disappointment. That contrast shifts the story toward the consequences of being seen—or refused—as human. Jacob Elordi, who plays the Creature, says, “In forgiveness is where the Creature learns that he can finally be human.” Forgiveness here is not a shortcut that erases injury; it is a way of asking what humanity might mean when a person has been denied care and recognition.

Shelley’s novel and del Toro’s emphasis
The film adapts Mary Shelley’s 1818 novel, but its creator-and-son relationship is a distinct interpretive emphasis rather than a claim to reproduce every dimension of the book. The comparison is less a matter of simple fidelity than of focus: Shelley’s story supplies the creation narrative, while del Toro foregrounds inherited trauma, parenthood, recognition and forgiveness. Readers who want the source text can turn to Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus; the film is an adaptation, not a substitute for the novel.

How the production choices shape the film’s spectacle
Netflix’s feature describes two choices that illuminate del Toro’s intended tone. For the icebound prologue, the production built a complete ship on a mechanical gimbal so it could rock. Del Toro says, “I wanted it to feel like an old movie that was made in the heyday of Hollywood.” The feature presents this as an effort to evoke an older kind of cinematic adventure through a substantial physical set.

The Creature’s assembly was also designed to feel joyful rather than conventionally ominous. That tonal choice suits a story in which creation is not only horror but also the beginning of a relationship—and of Victor’s responsibility. These production details come from Netflix’s account of the film and del Toro’s intentions; they establish the design goals, not by themselves how every finished image will look to viewers.
One historical detail also calls for care. Netflix’s feature identifies four real Evelyn anatomical tables associated with the Hunterian Museum in London. The fifth table used in the film’s story is fictional; it should not be presented as a fifth historical object.

Where the visual ambition meets resistance
Chang’s review in The New Yorker challenges the assumption that an expansive design automatically produces an expansive viewing experience. He describes a vast, elaborate canvas but argues that the images can feel flat and conspicuously digital. That is a critique of execution, not a reason to dismiss the production’s ambition: a film may be carefully conceived and still leave its visual effects feeling too evident or its scale less immersive than intended.
He also questions the mismatch between the film’s scale and its Netflix-centered presentation, particularly given the limited theatrical plans he discusses. That tension matters because spectacle depends partly on where and how it is encountered. A theatrical presentation and a home screen do not offer identical conditions, and individual screens vary; the criticism is about the distribution choice as well as the images themselves, not proof that every home viewing will feel diminished.

Is del Toro’s Frankenstein worth watching?
For viewers drawn to character-driven monster stories, the film’s father-and-son framing gives it a strong reason to stand apart from a generic “science gone wrong” retelling. The adaptation’s personal investment is legible in the themes del Toro emphasizes, and its production choices aim for a deliberately crafted, old-Hollywood sense of spectacle. Viewers primarily seeking consistently convincing visual effects or a large-scale experience may share Chang’s reservations about how that ambition comes across.
