What happens in “The Profligate”?
Lucy is caught in the Legion’s succession crisis
Lucy is taken captive by Caesar’s Legion, a faction from Fallout: New Vegas that occupies the former Mojave. With Caesar dead, rival camps are contesting the right to lead. An instruction connected to Caesar’s remains sits at the center of the dispute, leaving the faction in a tense standoff rather than united behind a successor. Esquire’s recap identifies Macaulay Culkin’s character in the Legion storyline as Legate Lacerta.
Lucy tries to negotiate, but her knowledge and ability to reason do not free her. She challenges the Legion’s use of Roman history, pointing out that “prima noctis” is a medieval, not Roman, tradition. The exchange exposes the gap between the Legion’s grand historical image and the violence it uses to maintain power.
#1 Best Overall
- Not even nuclear fallout could slow the hustle of Sin City. Explore the vast expanses of the desert wastelands
- Feuding Factions, Colorful Characters and a Host of Hostiles
- Enjoy new additions to Fallout: Special melee combat moves have been added to bring new meaning to the phrase "up close and personal"
- With double the amount of weapons found in Fallout 3
- In a huge, open world with unlimited options you can see the sights, choose sides, or go it alone
The Ghoul turns a stalemate into a fight
The Ghoul reconnects with Lucy and trades information with her about the New California Republic (NCR). He then leaves an explosive parting gift. The intervention breaks the Legion’s uneasy balance and sends its rival factions into open fighting. His move may help Lucy in the immediate moment, but it does not resolve who will control the Legion or what that power will mean for the Mojave.
Cooper Howard’s past keeps Robert House in play
The Ghoul’s story also cuts back to Cooper Howard’s pre-war life, when he was tasked with assassinating Robert House. House is not at the center of the episode’s present-day action, but the flashback shows that his influence—and Cooper’s history with him—continues to shape the larger story.

Who is Caesar’s Legion, and why does its arrival matter?
Caesar’s Legion is a human faction associated with Fallout: New Vegas, not a newly discovered creature or a threat from outside the setting. Its Roman styling and totalitarian ideology are bound up with slavery and conquest. In this episode, the Legion’s capture of Lucy brings that political violence directly into the television series, while its succession struggle shows how fragile its authority has become after Caesar’s death.
The New Vegas connection rewards familiarity with the game, but viewers do not need to know its story to understand the immediate stakes: Lucy is a prisoner among competing claimants, and the faction is turning against itself. The episode does not establish exactly how Caesar died or settle the game’s player-dependent ending; its account leaves room for different histories.

How the Brotherhood conflict echoes the Legion’s divide
The episode’s other major thread sets Elder Cleric Quintus against Xander, a visiting emissary from the Commonwealth. Their disagreement points toward a wider internal struggle within the Brotherhood of Steel. Maximus becomes involved with Xander, but their alliance hits a moral limit when Xander wants to kill Thaddeus’s ghoul children. Maximus refuses.
That choice gives the Brotherhood storyline a concrete human cost: the question is not only which leader or faction should prevail, but what its members are willing to do to people with less power. The Legion’s rival camps and the Brotherhood’s gathering split are distinct conflicts, yet both stories test whether loyalty to a cause can justify violence.

Is “The Profligate” the series’ best hour yet?
“Best hour yet” is a judgment, not a measurable fact established by a single score. The episode has a strong claim for viewers drawn to intersecting faction politics: Lucy’s captivity gives the Legion’s arrival immediate stakes, the Ghoul’s intervention changes the balance of power, and Maximus’s refusal gives the Brotherhood thread a character-defining choice. The pace also moves between brutal violence and the series’ absurd humor. Whether that combination makes it the season’s best episode is subjective.
Rotten Tomatoes displayed a 100% Tomatometer based on seven reviews when its episode listing was accessed. That is a time-specific snapshot of a small set of critics’ reviews; the score and review count can change. Rotten Tomatoes’ episode listing should not be read as a viewer rating or a settled ranking against the rest of the season.
Where the season is headed
Season 2 takes its characters through the Mojave toward New Vegas. Amazon’s season overview says all eight episodes are streaming exclusively on Prime Video. “The Profligate” makes that destination more than a backdrop: the Legion’s presence ties the journey to the game’s political history, while its internal crisis raises the question of what kind of power the characters will find there.
