Has filming started?
TheWrap reported on April 8, 2026, that filming was expected that summer and that David Weil would write the sequel, taking over from Joe Russo, who wrote the first two films. On July 24, 2026, What’s on Netflix reported that production had commenced in Sydney and on the New South Wales South Coast. The outlet attributed a statement about filming in New South Wales to Hargrave. This is later production reporting, rather than a Netflix announcement; the report does not establish a final shoot schedule or a complete location list.
What is known about the story?
Netflix has not disclosed the sequel’s plot. The franchise began with Ciudad, a graphic novel by Ande Parks, according to Netflix’s announcement. The book is the clearest starting point for readers interested in the source material, but the available announcement does not say how closely the third film will follow it.

Why Netflix is continuing the franchise
Netflix said both earlier Extraction films reached No. 1 on its Global Top 10 and appeared on its Most Popular English Films list. Its April 2026 announcement gave no chart dates or viewing totals, so those figures should not be read as a current ranking or as a quantified comparison between the films.
In the announcement, Angela Russo-Otstot, AGBO’s chief creative officer, said, “It’s incredibly exciting to continue our partnership with Netflix as we further expand the Extraction universe.” She also described continuing the creative collaboration with Hargrave, Hemsworth and the team behind the franchise. The remarks were part of Netflix’s announcement; they do not reveal story or release details.
