Spoilers for Pixar’s Elio throughout. Elio chooses to return to Earth with Aunt Olga instead of staying in the Communiverse. One mid-credits scene shows him and Bryce reaching Glordon by ham radio; a separate tag after the full credits features a lizard and points to Pixar’s Hoppers, not an Elio sequel.

Why Elio returns to Earth

Elio begins the story feeling that he does not belong on Earth. Pixar describes him as an 11-year-old drawn toward space, while producer Mary Alice Drumm says loneliness leads him to invest his hopes in the possibility of life beyond Earth. In the Communiverse, Elio finds relationships and acceptance, but the adventure also makes him confront who he is and where he belongs. Pixar’s film page and its production notes provide that character context.

At the end, Elio leaves the Communiverse and returns to Earth with Aunt Olga. The choice is bittersweet: he honors his relationship with Olga and the life he has at home, but must part from Glordon, the friend he made among the stars. The return is what happens in the story; reading it as Elio learning that belonging is not limited to a faraway place is an interpretation of that choice. /Film’s ending analysis also describes Elio’s decision to go home despite the acceptance he found in the Communiverse.

What happens in the mid-credits scene?

Back on the beach, Elio and Bryce use a ham radio to try to contact Glordon. At first, they cannot clearly hear him because his translation disc is muted. Once the communication comes through, Glordon tells Elio, “Tell me everything!” The scene ends before Elio can give him the full account. /Film’s scene breakdown and Inverse’s post-credits guide describe the exchange.

#1 Best Overall
Elio - Blu-ray + DVD + Digital
  • In this fun-filled, action-packed cosmic misadventure, Elio, a space fanatic with an active imagination, is beamed up to an interplanetary organization with members from galaxies far and wide. Mistaken for Earth?s leader, Elio must form bonds with alien life-forms, navigate an intergalactic crisis, and discover who and where he?s truly meant to be.

The call softens the goodbye without undoing Elio’s decision: his friendship with Glordon can continue across the distance. Returning to the beach also echoes Elio’s earlier attempts to make contact with life beyond Earth, but this time an actual friend answers. The scene offers the possibility of continued connection; it does not promise a particular future meeting.

What happens after the full credits?

After the main credits and thank-you sequence, a green cartoon lizard repeatedly taps the lizard emoji on a phone. A robotic text-to-speech voice says “Lizard,” and a Hoppers title card identifies the gag’s connection. It is a promotional tag for another Pixar film, not a continuation of Elio’s story or evidence that an Elio sequel has been announced. /Film and Inverse describe the tag as a Hoppers tie-in.

How many scenes should you wait for?

There are two additional scenes, in two different places: one during the credits and one after the full credits.

When What happens What it adds
Ending Elio returns to Earth with Olga rather than staying in the Communiverse. Resolves his choice to go home while leaving the separation from Glordon as an emotional cost.
Mid-credits Elio and Bryce reach Glordon by ham radio; he asks Elio to tell him everything. Shows that the friendship can continue after Elio’s return.
After the full credits A lizard types the lizard emoji, and the tag reveals its connection to Hoppers. Promotes another Pixar film; it does not reveal an Elio sequel.

What the filmmakers say about Elio’s journey

Director Madeline Sharafian describes Elio’s view of the events that take him into space this way: “To Elio, it’s more of a rescue than an abduction.” Director Domee Shi calls the Communiverse “the coolest club in the universe,” describing the place Elio hopes will accept him. Both quotations appear in Disney/Pixar’s production notes.
