Luc Besson’s Dracula is a character-focused romantic reinvention, not a straight retelling of Bram Stoker’s novel. In a review republished by Headtopics, Collider gives the film 6/10: Caleb Landry Jones’s charismatic, unusually sympathetic Dracula and the movie’s humor provide much of its appeal, while thinly drawn human characters and confusing story choices hold it back.
What is Luc Besson’s Dracula about?
The film follows a prince who, after failing to protect the person he loves, renounces God and is cursed to become an immortal vampire. Centuries later, he sees Mina, whose appearance recalls his lost wife, and pursues her. A vampire-hunting priest follows close behind.
That setup shifts the emphasis toward Dracula’s grief and longing. The Collider review, as republished by Headtopics, describes a more sympathetic central character, but does not suggest that the film makes his actions morally acceptable. Its romantic framing invites viewers to understand his fixation without excusing the harm he causes.
What works in the film?
Caleb Landry Jones’s Dracula
The review identifies Jones’s performance as the film’s strongest asset. His Dracula is charismatic and compelling, giving Besson’s character-centered approach an engaging focal point. The performance helps explain why the film can make its vampire protagonist unusually easy to follow, even as the story’s moral boundaries remain clear.

Humor and crowd-pleasing energy
The film also earns praise for its humor and entertaining, crowd-pleasing energy. Those qualities sit alongside the romantic tragedy rather than turning the story into a solemn, conventional horror retelling.
Where does this version falter?
Human characters receive little depth
Mina, Jonathan and the other human characters are given limited development in the review’s assessment. That imbalance keeps attention on Dracula, but leaves the people around him less fully realized.

Adaptation choices can confuse
Besson takes substantial liberties with Stoker’s story. The review welcomes some changes but finds others—particularly the treatment of Dracula’s minions and the explanation for his charm—confusing or unnecessary. It also describes the film’s handling of sunlight as perplexing, and says plot holes and inconsistencies weaken the narrative.
How does it change Bram Stoker’s novel?
This is best approached as a loose, romantic reinterpretation rather than a faithful screen version of Dracula. The film reshapes the familiar premise around the vampire’s loss and pursuit of Mina, while recasting or omitting figures from the novel. Christoph Waltz plays a character the review regards as a clear stand-in for Abraham Van Helsing. Matilda De Angelis plays a charismatic character whose role is compared with Renfield, who is absent from this version.
