What happens in “The Devil’s Chord”?
A secret chord summons Maestro
The episode opens in 1925, when a boy named Harbinger learns a secret chord at a piano. Playing it summons Maestro, who steals the pianist’s music and reveals a threat far larger than one person’s lost talent.
The Doctor and Ruby find a world losing its music
Ruby chooses to visit the Beatles recording in 1963. But the music she and the Doctor encounter is wrong: the Beatles, Cilla Black, and others produce results that sound absurdly poor. The Doctor realizes history has been tampered with.
He identifies Maestro as a being of the same class as the Toymaker. Maestro’s aim is not merely to silence individual musicians: the entity intends to remove music from creation. The Doctor and Ruby see the consequences of a world without it.

Who is Maestro, and why does the villain stand out?
Maestro, played by Jinkx Monsoon, is an exuberant and dangerous antagonist whose power is tied to music. That gives the conflict a clear, unusual shape: the Doctor must confront a threat that can make music disappear from people’s lives and from the world itself.
The episode connects Maestro to the Toymaker, placing the character among powerful beings who can bend reality. But Maestro’s particular weapon is music, and the story makes that threat tangible through the warped performances the Doctor and Ruby encounter.

What is the twist involving Ruby?
During the confrontation, “Carol of the Bells” emerges from Ruby. Her unexpected connection to the song disrupts Maestro and surprises both the entity and the Doctor. Maestro then makes cryptic remarks about the night Ruby was born and refers to an “oldest one.”
The episode does not explain Ruby’s origins or confirm what Maestro’s words mean. They create a mystery rather than settle one: Ruby’s musical resilience is an event, while any link between it and her birth remains open to interpretation.

How do the Doctor and the Beatles stop Maestro?
The Doctor challenges Maestro through music. The Beatles help supply the decisive chord, sending Maestro back into the piano. The ending then shifts into a musical number and leaves viewers with another cryptic tease: “one who waits.”
So the resolution depends on music in two ways: Ruby’s unexpected response unsettles Maestro, and the Beatles contribute the chord that defeats the immediate threat. The episode closes without resolving the larger mysteries around Ruby or the final tease.
