The official Disclosure Day trailer frames Steven Spielberg’s new film around a frightening possibility: “If you found out we weren’t alone, if someone showed you, proved it to you, would that frighten you?” It is a question posed to sell a work of fiction—not evidence of real-world extraterrestrial contact.
What the ‘Disclosure Day’ trailer reveals
The trailer keeps the story deliberately broad, building suspense around proof that humanity is not alone and what might happen if that truth became public. Universal’s promotional copy calls it a truth belonging to “seven billion people”; NBCUniversal’s trailer page instead says “eight billion people.” Those conflicting lines are marketing language, not a reliable population statistic.
The film is an original event film created and directed by Steven Spielberg, based on his story and written by David Koepp. Its listed principal cast includes Emily Blunt, Josh O’Connor, Colin Firth, Eve Hewson and Colman Domingo. NBCUniversal’s official trailer page presents the film through the same central question of whether proof of other life would frighten people.
How Spielberg describes the film
In an Associated Press interview published June 3, 2026, Spielberg described the project this way: “It’s my first film that will be considered science fiction that I do not consider to be science fiction.” That is the filmmaker’s characterization of his approach, not a claim that the story reflects verified discoveries. The AP interview also connects the film to Spielberg’s long-running interest in “the secrets of the sky.”

What is known about the story and characters
The trailer’s official synopsis offers a premise rather than a detailed plot. In the AP interview, Josh O’Connor’s character, Daniel Kellner, is described as a cybersecurity whistleblower with government evidence of a suppressed history of alien encounters. Colman Domingo plays a leader in the disclosure movement, Colin Firth a corporate executive, and Emily Blunt a meteorologist named Margaret Fairchild who experiences a mysterious epiphany. These are reported story details from the interview, beyond what the trailer itself explains.
The Associated Press review describes the finished film as a story of ordinary people challenging those who keep evidence of extraterrestrial contact secret; it also identifies Firth’s character as the leader of WARDEX. That framing is the reviewer’s interpretation. The review reports a U.S. PG-13 rating and a 145-minute runtime. Read the AP review for its assessment of the completed film.

What the trailer is—and is not—offering
Disclosure Day uses the language of revelation and secrecy to set up an alien-contact thriller, while withholding enough plot detail to preserve its mystery. Spielberg’s comments describe his creative perspective, and the promotional lines about humanity learning the truth belong to the film’s fictional premise. Neither the trailer nor the filmmaker’s remarks establish that governments have confirmed extraterrestrial encounters.
