What happens in “Optics”?
Matt is trying to work as a lawyer without returning to life as Daredevil. His resolve is tested at the 15th Precinct, where he has gone to handle a DUI matter. He overhears an officer pressuring Hector Ayala to sign a confession and recognizes that Ayala needs a lawyer who will challenge the police account.

Ayala was arrested after intervening when two men attacked someone on a subway platform. One of the attackers fell onto the tracks as a train arrived. The men were undercover police officers, and the version of events presented by the police obscures their actions. Matt listens to Ayala’s account, takes his case, and begins looking for a way to expose what happened without letting the case be reduced to a label.
Why does Matt try to keep the White Tiger identity out of court?
Hector Ayala is secretly the White Tiger, a vigilante. Matt persuades the judge to exclude that identity from evidence so jurors can focus on the subway incident and the conduct of the people involved. The legal choice is also a practical one: if the case becomes a trial of Ayala’s identity, the facts surrounding the officers’ actions risk being pushed aside.
#1 Best Overall
Investigator Cherry and Matt’s former colleague Kirsten McDuffie visit Ayala’s wife, Soledad, and discover that Ayala is the White Tiger. That discovery gives the episode’s public-versus-hidden identity theme a personal stake: Ayala’s concealed role could shape how others see him before they consider the events that led to his arrest.
How does Fisk’s new role as mayor change the conflict?
Fisk is frustrated by the obstacles of governing and responds with pressure and shortcuts, including leaning on a police commissioner. His political position gives him a public platform, but the episode presents his methods as continuous with the coercion that defined him before office. Against that, Matt’s courtroom strategy depends on procedure: protecting his client by narrowing the case to evidence a jury can properly consider.
Rank #2
The contrast is not simply between a lawyer and a politician. Both men are trying to shape what the public sees. Fisk uses his office to push events toward his preferred outcome; Matt tries to prevent Ayala’s hidden identity from eclipsing the facts.
Why does Matt attack the officers at the end?
Near the end, Matt follows undercover officer Powell and learns that the officers are going after Nicky Torres, a witness. Matt reaches Torres first and gets him out of his apartment. When the officers attack Matt and draw a gun, he responds with overwhelming force.

He has tried to protect Ayala through the courts, but when the system appears to threaten a witness, Matt falls back on physical force. The episode leaves that choice unresolved rather than presenting it as a clean victory: Torres is out of immediate danger, but Matt’s attempt to separate the lawyer from the vigilante is failing.
