Although the announcement came days after Artem Chigvintsev’s arrest, contemporaneous reporting said Chigvintsev was already not scheduled for the season before the arrest became public. The available sources do not establish that the arrest caused Sosa’s promotion—or explain the show’s casting decision.
What happened, and when?
- August 29, 2024: Chigvintsev was arrested in Napa County on suspicion of felony domestic violence and booked under California Penal Code 273.5(a), according to ABC News. An arrest and suspicion are not a finding of guilt.
- August 30: The Washington Post reported, citing a source familiar with show plans, that Chigvintsev was not scheduled for Season 33. That report placed the roster decision before news of his arrest became public; it did not say why he was not scheduled.
- September 3: Deseret News reported that Sosa’s promotion had been announced. Sosa had joined the show’s troupe in 2021 and had filled in for Chigvintsev for one episode the previous season after Chigvintsev tested positive for COVID-19. That earlier substitution does not establish a connection between the arrest and the promotion.
- September 4: ABC and Disney’s official Season 33 announcement listed Sosa as Delvey’s professional partner. It said the season would premiere September 17 on ABC and Disney+, with episodes available on Hulu the following day.
- September 24–25: Napa County prosecutors announced they would not file charges after reviewing the evidence, as ABC7 reported on September 25.
Who was Ezra Sosa paired with?
ABC and Disney named Anna Delvey as Sosa’s Season 33 partner in the official cast announcement. The same release listed 13 celebrity-professional pairs and set the premiere for September 17, 2024. Its platform details describe the distribution plan announced at that time, not necessarily where the season is available now.
Did Chigvintsev’s arrest lead to Sosa’s promotion?
The timing alone does not show that it did. The Washington Post’s August 30 report said Chigvintsev was not scheduled for the season, while Deseret News reported Sosa’s promotion on September 3. Those accounts do not establish a causal link or disclose the reason for the casting choice. ABC’s September 4 announcement confirms Sosa’s pairing, but it does not explain the decision.
What was the outcome of the arrest?
The arrest was made on suspicion of felony domestic violence; prosecutors later declined to file charges after reviewing the evidence. Napa County District Attorney Allison Haley said, as quoted by ABC7, “While we take every arrest seriously and stand firmly against domestic violence, we have an ethical obligation to only file charges when supported by the evidence.” A decision not to file charges is not a conviction or a finding of guilt.
