Cobra Kai is over: Netflix calls its sixth season the series’ final one, and all 15 episodes have been released in three parts. The larger Karate Kid franchise is a different matter. Its creators have said they have ideas for another iteration, but have not confirmed a new project; their February 2025 comments made any next step dependent on talks with Sony and Netflix.
Is Cobra Kai really over?
Yes. Netflix identifies Season 6 as the final season, closing the story of the series that brought Daniel LaRusso and Johnny Lawrence back into conflict decades after the original films. Netflix says the season has 15 episodes, released in three parts, and that all three parts are available. Netflix Tudum’s Season 6 guide describes the conclusion; Netflix’s official series page frames the show as a continuation of The Karate Kid films.

The series began in 2018, revisiting the rivalry that began around the 1984 All Valley Karate Tournament. Sony announced the show in 2017 as a reunion of Ralph Macchio and William Zabka in their film roles. Netflix’s franchise retrospective traces that legacy, while Sony’s original series announcement documents its launch.
Does the end of the series mean the franchise is finished?
No. The end of Cobra Kai settles the status of that series, not the future of every story in the franchise. In a February 21, 2025 interview with the Television Academy, co-creators Josh Heald, Jon Hurwitz, and Hayden Schlossberg described the show as the end of the “mothership” and said they had ideas for another iteration. They also said what happens next depends on discussions with Sony and Netflix.

- From Academy Award-winning director John G. Avildsen (1976, ROCKY) comes the highly entertaining, coming-of-age classic that will have you cheering! Starring Ralph Macchio and Noriyuki ?Pat? Morita in his Academy Award-nominated performance (Best Supporting Actor, 1984) as Mr. Miyagi.
Heald put the sentiment this way: “I don’t think we’ll ever have closure with this franchise — because we just love it so much — and we don’t want to close the door.” That is an expression of the creators’ enthusiasm, not an announcement that a follow-up has been approved or is in production. The interview establishes interest and a possible path, but does not confirm a spin-off or other new Cobra Kai project. Read the Television Academy interview.
What does Sony’s film announcement establish?
Sony’s May 16, 2024 announcement called Karate Kid an enduring property and said a new film from the original franchise was scheduled to open theatrically on May 30, 2025. It also listed Cobra Kai among Sony’s contemporary properties. This shows that Sony was planning franchise activity beyond the series at that time; it is a dated announcement, not proof of the current film slate or of any later installment. Sony’s release provides that historical context.

How to read the franchise’s status
| Part of the story | What is established | What is not established by these announcements |
|---|---|---|
| Cobra Kai series | Season 6 is the final season; it contains 15 episodes across three parts, all available according to Netflix Tudum. | A continuation of the completed series. |
| Possible next iteration | The co-creators said in their February 21, 2025 Television Academy interview that they had ideas, with next steps dependent on discussions with Sony and Netflix. | A greenlight, production start, release date, format, or confirmed spin-off. |
| Karate Kid film activity | Sony’s May 16, 2024 release said a new film was scheduled for May 30, 2025. | That 2024 statement alone does not establish the current slate or announce a subsequent film. |
The practical distinction is simple: Cobra Kai has a confirmed ending, while the franchise remains open to future storytelling. The creators’ comments leave that possibility alive, but the cited statements do not confirm what, if anything, will follow.
