A24’s trailer for Civil War presents a frightening near-future America, but the 2024 film is fiction, not a forecast of an actual conflict. Written and directed by Alex Garland, it follows journalists traveling through a divided United States to document the fighting. Garland described its political concern as extremism versus centrism—not simply one side of the conventional left-versus-right divide.
What the trailer shows—and what it doesn’t establish
A24 uploaded its Civil War official trailer on December 13, 2023, ahead of the film’s April 12, 2024 release. A24 describes the movie as “An adrenaline-fueled thrill ride through a near-future fractured America balanced on the razor’s edge.” That is a dramatic fictional premise, not a claim about what will happen in the United States.

The trailer’s unsettling effect comes from imagining familiar American settings amid a breakdown of national order. Calling that vision “scary” is an interpretation of the trailer, not a measured audience response or an assessment of its predictive accuracy. The material cited here does not establish that the film predicts an imminent civil war.
What Alex Garland says the film is about
Garland has called Civil War political, while distinguishing its emphasis from a simple left-versus-right account. In a PBS NewsHour interview published April 16, 2024, he said, “The essence of the film in political terms is absolutely extremist versus centrist, yes.” He also described his concern as “the power and growth of extremist thinking within your country, my country, and many European countries.”

#1 Best Overall
- A race to the White House in a near-future America balanced on the razor's edge.
At the film’s SXSW premiere, as reported by The Associated Press on March 15, 2024, Garland said it was “intended as a conversation,” not a lecture. That framing matters: the fictional conflict is not presented in the cited reporting as a complete explanation of every faction’s politics or the events that caused the war.
The feature follows journalists, not a faction’s political program
The movie’s central journey is that of journalists attempting to record the conflict. The Associated Press’s SXSW report describes reporters traveling through the war, and PBS identifies Kirsten Dunst’s character as a veteran war photographer traveling toward Washington with other journalists.

- A race to the White House in a near-future America balanced on the razor's edge.
That focus changes how the trailer’s images should be read. In its April 9, 2024 review, AP critic Lindsey Bahr cautioned that “that trailer that had everyone talking is not the story.” Bahr’s interpretation foregrounds the reporters’ work, the act of bearing witness, and the ethical questions raised by photographing violence. Those are critical observations about the feature, rather than a claim that every viewer will read it the same way.
Dunst told PBS, “Every time I survived a war zone, I thought I was sending a warning home: Don’t do this.” The remark reflects the character’s experience as a war photographer and the film’s concern with what images of conflict can communicate; it is not evidence that the fictional events are a prediction.

Why the trailer shouldn’t be treated as a forecast
The trailer is a marketing edit for a fictional, near-future drama. It can make a premise vivid without demonstrating that the depicted events are likely, imminent, or based on a specific prediction. Garland’s own remarks frame the film as a conversation about extremism, while the story follows journalists through a conflict rather than setting out a definitive political program for its factions.
Box-office figures do not measure fear or belief in the film’s scenario. AP reported studio estimates of $25.7 million in North American ticket sales for the April 12–14, 2024 opening weekend. That is a dated opening-weekend estimate, not a lifetime total or evidence of how audiences interpreted the trailer.
