In a Black Friday stunt in 2016, Cards Against Humanity collected a reported $100,573 to keep a backhoe digging a hole. The dig was livestreamed and ended on Sunday; the company presented the project as a joke with no practical purpose.
What was the Holiday Hole?
Cards Against Humanity launched the Holiday Hole around Black Friday 2016. The campaign invited people to contribute money toward more digging, while a livestream showed a backhoe at work. Contemporary coverage reported on November 28 that the dig had finished on Sunday and that contributions totaled $100,573.
That figure is the total reported at the campaign’s conclusion, not an independently audited financial statement. Cards Against Humanity is best known for its party card game, but buying the game was separate from contributing to the Holiday Hole.
How did contributions keep the digging going?
Contributions bought additional digging time, and the amount of time per dollar decreased as the operation continued. NPR reported that the first dollar bought 5.5 seconds of digging; by Sunday, a dollar bought 0.3 seconds.
#1 Best Overall
- Cards Against Humanity is a party game for horrible people.
- Now version 2.0! Over 150 new cards since the last version.
- Contains 500 white cards and 100 black cards for maximum replayability.
- Includes a booklet of sensible game rules and preposterous alternate rules.
- America's #1 gerbil coffin.
Claire Friedman, identified in The Guardian’s November 28, 2016 report as a Cards Against Humanity employee, explained the changing rate: “It’s set so time gets more expensive the longer we dig. The first dollar paid for 5.5 seconds, now it’ll only get .3. Basically just reflecting the longer we need to hold crew and equipment here, the more expensive it gets.” The figures describe this campaign’s mechanics, not a general pricing scheme.
Was there a purpose to the hole?
The campaign’s FAQ said there was no deeper meaning or purpose and that people were supposed to think it was funny. The company’s stated premise was the joke: contributions paid for more digging, without a practical goal offered for the hole.

And in our hearts.” The sources reporting the stunt do not establish a specific state or site, the hole’s measured size or depth, its environmental effects, or what happened to it afterward.
