Shane Brando recalled that his grandfather, actor Marlon Brando, would sometimes mute a movie while watching it with the family. Shane’s later explanation was that Brando wanted to see whether the actors’ performances felt believable without music or dialogue—but that is Shane’s interpretation, not a reason Brando confirmed himself.
What was Marlon Brando’s TV habit?
In an interview published by Entertainment Weekly, republished by AOL on August 29, 2024, Shane said his grandfather would unexpectedly mute a film and leave it silent for a while as the family watched. Shane recalled wondering whether Brando was “messing with the family.”

Shane said Brando would eventually turn the sound back on, sometimes after the family had missed several minutes of the movie. Shane remembered the family letting the silence continue rather than asking Brando to unmute it: “My grandpa being my grandpa, nobody’s going to say, ‘Hey gramps, unmute the TV. We’re watching this.’”
Why did Brando mute the movie?
Shane said he later understood the habit as a way for Brando to watch the actors without music or dialogue and judge whether their performances seemed convincing on their own. As Shane put it: “He was like, can I believe this in real time with no sound?”

That explanation comes from Shane’s recollection and later understanding of the behavior. The interview does not establish Brando’s motive independently or report Brando explaining it himself.

Shane shared the family memory in an interview tied to his appearance on season three of Claim to Fame. Post-season interviews by TV Insider and Parade, both published August 28, 2024, also identify Marlon Brando as Shane’s grandfather and discuss his experience on the show.
