What happens to Sam and Diane in the Cheers finale?
In “One for the Road,” the three-part, 98-minute finale broadcast on May 20, 1993, Diane returns to Boston six years after leaving to concentrate on writing. Sam invites her to visit, not expecting her to show up. They reconnect at Cheers and leave together. The next day, they announce that they are engaged and plan to move to California. The Television Academy’s recap of the finale documents the reunion and their plan.

The bar regulars are not thrilled by the engagement. When electrical trouble delays their plane, Sam and Diane have time to question whether they are choosing each other out of love or out of fear of being alone. They decide to separate, and Sam goes back to Cheers. The finale’s answer is clear: they do not end the series as a couple.
What does the final scene mean?
After returning to the bar, Sam strokes it and says, “I’m the luckiest son-of-a-bitch on earth.” He tells a prospective customer that the bar is closed, adjusts a picture of Geronimo, and exits through the back. Earlier, Norm tells him, “You could never be unfaithful to your one true love. You always come back to her.” When Sam asks who “she” is, Norm replies, “Think about it, Sam.”

#1 Best Overall
The line leaves its referent unstated, but the final image points toward Cheers as Sam’s lasting home: the bar and its community are what he returns to. It is not a hint that Diane is waiting for him or that they secretly remain together.
Did the writers intend Sam and Diane to reunite?
In a 2016 retrospective, Cheers writer Ken Levine said the finale was conceived and written by Glen and Les Charles, and recalled that “there was never any intention of getting them together at the end.” Levine agreed with the choice: he felt Sam and Diane were very different, and that the relationship’s energy came from conflict and new complications. He joked that leaving together would have driven them “insane.” These are Levine’s later reflections, not dialogue from the episode or a new statement by the Charles brothers. TV Series Finale reported Levine’s comments.

Does the season-five ending suggest a different future?
In “I Do, Adieu,” Diane’s departure at the end of season five includes a sequence in which an elderly Sam and Diane dance to Irving Berlin’s “What’ll I Do?” The episode does not explicitly label the sequence as fantasy. A contributor to a Television Academy retrospective offers a personal reading of the dance as the real, canonical end to their story. That is an interpretation of an ambiguous sequence, not confirmation that Sam and Diane end the 1993 series together.
“One for the Road” shows their engagement, reconsideration, and separation. It provides no later epilogue revealing a marriage, reunion, or continuing relationship. What happens between them after the final episode is left unknown.

Why did Cheers end?
The show ended after Ted Danson decided not to return as Sam Malone. In a 2004 TV Guide interview, executive producer and co-creator Les Charles said, “We would not do the show without Ted”; Danson said it was time for him to leave. That context helps explain why the finale brings Sam back to Cheers, but it does not establish any further outcome for Diane. TV Guide covered the decision to end the series.
