Netflix’s behind-the-scenes video shows Ana de Armas being transformed for her role as Marilyn Monroe in the 2022 film Blonde. The time-lapse runs for under a minute, but Netflix says the hair and makeup process took up to three hours a day.

What the ‘Blonde’ transformation video shows

The clip compresses the film’s daily preparation into a rapid sequence: de Armas begins with her natural brunette hair and bare face, then appears in Monroe’s blonde hair and screen makeup. It is production footage, not a real-time makeover. Netflix published the video with its behind-the-scenes feature on September 30, 2022. Watch the Netflix Tudum video and read its description.

How the crew built Monroe’s screen look

The transformation involved more than a blonde wig and familiar lipstick. Netflix’s production feature describes a wig cap, eyebrow work, layered makeup, and a prosthetic bald cap designed to hide de Armas’s natural hair color. Makeup department head Tina Roesler Kerwin used contouring and eyelashes to change the impression of the actor’s features; hair department head Jaime Leigh McIntosh created hair looks for different periods of Monroe’s life. Netflix Tudum’s production feature explains the hair and makeup work.

The team adapted the look to de Armas rather than simply copying Monroe’s makeup. Netflix reports that the crew considered differences in hairline and face shape, and that bleaching and reshaping de Armas’s eyebrows helped establish a closer silhouette. De Armas described the process to Netflix Tudum as “finding the shape of her in me.”

Different looks for different periods

The film called for many versions of Monroe’s appearance, from a younger, fuller Norma Jeane to more sculpted later looks. Kerwin estimated that the makeup team created close to 100 looks, according to Netflix. McIntosh’s hair work ranged from strawberry blond to bleached platinum. These figures describe the crew’s reported production work, not an independently counted inventory.

How long did Ana de Armas’s transformation take?

Netflix reported that the crew spent up to three hours each day preparing de Armas for the role. In separate reporting based on interviews with the film’s hair and makeup crew and wig maker, Allure described two to two and a half hours for morning hair and makeup, plus around 30 minutes for removal and cleanup. The figures measure the process differently, so they should not be treated as competing stopwatch readings or combined into a single average. Read Allure’s reporting on the transformation.

The resemblance came from more than hair and makeup

Director Andrew Dominik told BFI Sight and Sound that the crew selected photographs of Monroe as references and staged scenes around them. He cited camera height and a 50mm lens among the choices used to evoke particular images; aspect ratio and color also followed the visual references. Dominik put the film’s approach this way: “I’m not interested in reality, I’m interested in the images.” Read the BFI interview with Dominik.

What the video does—and does not—establish

The clip shows how a film crew constructed a screen image; it is not historical evidence about Monroe’s appearance in every period or about her private life. Blonde is based on Joyce Carol Oates’s 2000 novel and is a fictionalized reimagining, not a documentary or a straightforward biographical record. The video is best understood as a glimpse of the craft used to create the film’s visual interpretation of Monroe.
