Blink follows the Lemay-Pelletier family as they set out to make shared memories after three of their four children are diagnosed with retinitis pigmentosa, a progressive retinal condition. Its central idea is moving: travel together while the children can still see the world around them. The film’s strongest emotional pull comes from that urgency; its challenge is to keep the children’s lives larger than the diagnosis that gives the journey its shape.
What is Blink about?
Directed by Edmund Stenson and Daniel Roher, this 2024 documentary follows Edith Lemay, Sébastien Pelletier, and their four children. After three children are diagnosed with retinitis pigmentosa, the parents decide to travel as a family, building visual memories and sharing experiences while the children still have useful sight.

National Geographic’s distributor announcement says the family left in March 2022 without a fixed itinerary and spent a year visiting 24 countries. They built a shared bucket list, favored ground transport, and looked for guest houses and homestays. The announced itinerary ranged from swimming with dolphins to watching a mountain sunrise. Those details give the premise a practical texture: this is not simply a montage of postcard destinations, but an attempt to shape a family’s time around what each member wants to experience.
How the film handles the family’s story
The journey is compelling because it places ordinary family life beside an extraordinary pressure. The diagnosis gives the trip urgency, but the children are not merely symbols of resilience or a reason for adults to deliver a lesson about gratitude. What matters is the family making choices together—what to see, how to get there, and how to spend time as a unit.

That framing also sets a limit on what the travel can mean. The trip is a way to share experiences and create memories; it does not cure retinitis pigmentosa or establish that travel changes the condition’s course. The film’s emotional idea works best when the journey remains a response to uncertainty, not a neat solution to it.
What the film does—and does not—say about retinitis pigmentosa
Retinitis pigmentosa is a group of disorders affecting the light-sensitive retina. National Geographic’s medical explainer, updated December 17, 2024, describes difficulty seeing at night and loss of peripheral vision as common early signs, while emphasizing that symptoms and progression vary. It reports that the condition affects about one in 4,000 people in the United States; that estimate is specific to the U.S. and should not be treated as a universal rate.
Rank #2
The medical picture is not a simple promise of treatment or prevention. Some gene therapies exist, but Luxturna applies only to a small subset of patients with particular gene abnormalities; it is not a general cure for retinitis pigmentosa. The same explainer says evidence linking vitamin A, fish oil, or lutein with prevention was correlational, not proof that those substances prevent the condition. Blink is a family documentary, not individualized medical guidance.
Is Blink worth watching?
For viewers open to an emotionally direct family story, yes. The premise gives the film a clear source of tension, while the travel offers visible, concrete moments of discovery. The title’s central metaphor—taking in the world before sight changes—can feel almost unbearably tender. That intensity is also the film’s main risk: when a story is organized around impending loss, it can make every experience feel like a lesson or a countdown. The most affecting parts are those that let the family remain a family, rather than turning their journey into an inspirational slogan.

National Geographic’s official production page reproduces two critics’ responses that capture the film’s emotional register. Nicolas Rapold of The New York Times wrote, “Life comes at you fast, after all, and ‘Blink’ reminds us to look at each day as if it might be the last.” Christian Zilko of IndieWire described it as a film about parents seeking joy for their children in an indifferent world. Those are critics’ assessments, not a substitute for your own response; the film’s impact will depend in part on how you feel about its earnest, high-emotion approach.
Is Blink appropriate for kids?
Disney lists Blink as PG and gives its runtime as 1 hour 24 minutes. Its subject—children facing a condition that may progressively affect their sight—can prompt difficult conversations. Parents and caregivers may want to consider a child’s age, sensitivity to illness, and readiness to talk about disability and uncertainty. The PG rating is a useful guide, but it does not tell you how a particular child will respond.

Where can you watch Blink?
Disney+ lists the film; check your local catalog for current availability, since streaming rights differ by territory and can change. In the United States, National Geographic announced that the film debuted on television December 16, 2024, and arrived on Disney+ and Hulu the following day. That announcement describes the launch, not a guarantee that it remains on either service now.
Disney’s listing shows audio description and subtitles/closed captions. National Geographic also said an English audio-description version would be available on Disney+ and Hulu at the U.S. streaming launch in December 2024. For present-day access, confirm the options shown in your local service listing.
