Screenwriter Alfred Gough explains how both moments came together: Tim Burton suggested the song after the writers decided they wanted a musical number, and he invited DeVito to take the small role.
Why does “MacArthur Park” play during the wedding?
The song was not part of the original plan for the script. Gough said the writers wanted a musical number but had not settled on a song. Burton then suggested “MacArthur Park,” which he kept on a jukebox at home. Gough recalled, “We all wanted a musical number,” and said Burton called with the song idea. The writers listened to it and developed the sequence around it as the ending evolved. Burton later said the song “just fit the spirit of it.”
Gough described the number as a way to give the story a less predictable turn: the plot seemed to be wrapping up too neatly before the writers returned to the idea of a musical finale. The result makes Beetlejuice the ringleader of the wedding chaos, rather than simply repeating the original film’s musical moment.
How it differs from “Day-O” in the first film
Gough pointed out that the Maitlands, not Beetlejuice, performed “Day-O” in the original Beetlejuice. For the sequel, the creative choice was to put Beetlejuice at the center of the new number. At the church, he attempts to marry Lydia and leads the possession sequence, with Lydia, Astrid, Delia and the priest lip-syncing to the song.

How the song was shaped in editing
The scene was assembled from cast members lip-syncing to different portions of the Richard Harris recording. Editor Jay Prychidny said Burton wanted a mashup, so the editorial team rearranged and connected sections to keep the visuals and momentum working together. Prychidny called it “the MacArthur Park wedding sequence at the end of the film” and said the fast disco section was intended to begin as Willem Dafoe’s ghoul squad entered. The sequence is therefore not simply a continuous performance of the song in its original order.
Prychidny described the Richard Harris recording as seven minutes and 21 seconds; Gough separately called it a “seven-and-a-half minute song.” Those are descriptions of the recording, not the runtime of the edited film sequence.

What happens after the wedding finale?
The ending guide’s plot recap identifies the later Transylvania trip, Astrid’s sudden marriage and pregnancy, and the baby Beetlejuice as part of Lydia’s nightmare. Lydia wakes again alone. That is a recap of what the film presents, not evidence of a specific symbolic explanation from the filmmakers.

DeVito plays a ghost janitor in an Afterlife corridor. He is the first person Delores encounters after returning to the Afterlife, and she kills him. Gough said the part was not written with a particular actor in mind. Burton called DeVito, who agreed quickly; as Gough put it, “Tim called Danny and Danny said yes in a minute and came and did it, which was great.” Gough described the cameo as a fun surprise near the beginning of the film.

The appearance also reunites DeVito with Burton and Michael Keaton, his collaborators on earlier films. Its brief length is part of the joke and surprise: DeVito is not introduced as a major new character, but as a memorable first encounter in Delores’s return to the Afterlife.
