Lydia’s celebratory dance closes the film on a comic note—and marks a change from trying to drive one another out to sharing the house.
What happens at the end of Beetlejuice?
Beetlejuice’s attempt to force a marriage with Lydia is stopped. The Maitlands—Adam and Barbara, who are dead—remain in their home alongside the living Deetz family. Rather than ending with one household vanquishing or displacing the other, the film arrives at a workable arrangement between them.
Lydia is the link between the two families. She can see and relate to the Maitlands without giving up her connection to her living family. Her place among them does not depend on dying or joining the ghosts in the afterlife.
Why does Lydia dance at the end?
Lydia’s dance is a comic release after the supernatural danger and conflict. It also gives the ending its communal quality: the film brings the families together around Lydia’s school success rather than separating her from the living world. That reading follows the released story; it is not a claim about a stated authorial intention.

Does Lydia die in Beetlejuice?
No. Lydia is alive at the end of the released 1988 film. The idea that she dies in a fire and spends eternity with Adam and Barbara belonged to an earlier version of the ending, not a scene in the released cut.
How the released ending differs from the earlier idea

Wilson described the original idea this way: “Our first ending was Lydia — she died in a fire and was able to join Barbara and Adam in the afterlife.” He said the filmmakers reconsidered whether that was the message they wanted to send to young viewers. The distinction matters: the fire ending is an earlier story version, not a deleted sequence from the movie as released. CinemaBlend’s 2018 report quotes Wilson’s account.

How the sequel relates to the original’s ending
The original closes with the families sharing a home, but that moment does not settle the characters’ futures permanently. In a 2023 BFI interview, Burton said he approached the sequel by asking what had happened to Lydia and the Deetz family over the intervening years. BFI interview. TIME’s 2024 sequel coverage says the Maitlands had moved on to another plane while Beetlejuice remained active in the Netherworld. That later story revisits the characters after the original’s period of coexistence; it does not change what happens in the 1988 film. TIME’s sequel coverage.
