The Russo brothers said he lived through outcomes, died in them, and reset to examine another. A fan theory tries to derive the number from combinations of heroes surviving or dying, but that remains speculation—not an established explanation for why the film uses that exact figure.
What Strange’s number refers to
In Avengers: Infinity War, Strange looks ahead to possible outcomes of the Avengers’ conflict with Thanos and tells Tony Stark he saw 14,000,605 futures. In Avengers: Endgame, the heroes’ eventual victory supplies the crucial outcome: among the futures Strange examined, there was a path in which they won.
The number is a line of fictional dialogue, not a real-world statistical finding. It tells viewers that Strange considered an extraordinary range of outcomes; by itself, it does not reveal how the writers arrived at 14,000,605.
What the Russo brothers said Strange experienced
In a WIRED Q&A published August 19, 2019, Endgame co-director Joe Russo described Strange’s process as physically living through scenarios and dying in them. He said Strange reset just before death, as he had learned to do in Doctor Strange, and repeated the process, taking notes each time.

Co-director Anthony Russo added that Strange could have been in that state “for who knows how long.” The sequence is brief on screen, so its length does not establish how much time the experience took from Strange’s perspective. The directors’ account explains the process, but neither director supplied an arithmetic derivation of the exact total.
The fan theory based on combinations of heroes
A theory reported by BGR attempts to make the count meaningful by considering different patterns of which heroes survive or die after Thanos’s Snap. It treats Vision as a special case, adding hypothetical outcomes in which he survives long enough to take part in the fight.

The underlying idea is that changing who remains alive changes the available paths to a final confrontation. But the theory is not a demonstrated calculation from the film’s creators. BGR cautions that it starts with the known number and adjusts assumptions to approach it. Without a confirmed set of rules for which characters and outcomes count, the combination exercise cannot establish authorial intent.
What Strange’s silence to Tony might mean
When Tony asks whether Strange will tell him what happens, Strange replies, “If I tell you what happens, it won’t happen.” A fan interpretation covered by TIME suggests Strange may have tested scenarios in which he disclosed the future and found that telling Tony could change the choices leading to victory.

That reading can help explain the line, but it is not a confirmed account of what Strange saw. The film does not establish that he stayed silent specifically to ensure Tony’s eventual sacrifice.
Strange’s future search is not the time heist
Endgame also features time travel, but that mechanism is separate from Strange’s examination of possible futures. In a May 3, 2019, Los Angeles Times interview, Anthony Russo described the film’s rule as: “you cannot change the present by altering the past.” Going back can create an alternate future rather than rewrite the present.

That rule concerns the Avengers’ trip into the past. It does not explain how Strange searches future outcomes, nor does it validate the hero-combination theory.

- Confirmed by the directors: Strange repeatedly experienced scenarios, died in them, reset, and tried again.
- Not explained by the directors: why the number is exactly 14,000,605.
- Fan speculation: the proposed calculation from hero survival patterns, including Vision-specific possibilities, and the idea that Strange’s silence was needed to preserve the winning path.
The strongest supported answer is therefore about the method, not the math: Strange searched possibilities by experiencing them, while the precise reason the story names 14,000,605 has not been confirmed in the cited filmmaker commentary.
