Several returned in later films, but not always as the same character: Weaver, for example, plays Kiri in the sequel, not Dr. Grace Augustine. Here’s who appeared in the original and what the franchise’s later cast lists establish about them.
The original Avatar cast
James Cameron’s Avatar was released on December 18, 2009. The film runs 2 hours and 41 minutes, and Cameron is credited as both its writer and director. 20th Century Studios lists these principal cast members:
- Sam Worthington as Jake Sully
- Zoe Saldaña as Neytiri
- Stephen Lang as Colonel Miles Quaritch
- Michelle Rodriguez as Trudy Chacón
- Sigourney Weaver as Dr. Grace Augustine
- Giovanni Ribisi as Parker Selfridge
20th Century Studios’ Avatar page provides the film’s date, runtime, and cast listing.
Which original stars returned in the sequels?
The franchise’s cast lists confirm that several actors from the 2009 film continued into later installments. Avatar: The Way of Water takes place more than a decade after the first film and includes returning performers Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldaña, Sigourney Weaver and Stephen Lang. The official film page identifies the sequel’s setting and cast.

Avatar: Fire and Ash lists Worthington as Jake Sully and Saldaña as Neytiri among its cast. Its announced release date was December 19, 2025; the date is also given in Disney’s press kit. See the official film page for the cast listing.
Sigourney Weaver plays a different character
Weaver’s return is a new role, not a reprise of Grace Augustine. She played Dr. Grace in the original Avatar and plays Kiri in The Way of Water. An official interview with Weaver distinguishes the characters. That distinction matters when describing the cast: a performer can return to the franchise without returning as the same character.

What “then and now” can—and can’t—tell you
The dated film credits establish where these performers appeared in the Avatar franchise, not a complete account of their work outside it. The original and sequel cast lists confirm franchise continuity for the names above; they do not, by themselves, establish each actor’s latest projects or summarize a broader career. A fair career update would need dated credits for each performer and should distinguish released work from announced projects.
For the original film’s complete credited cast, consult Avatar.com’s Avatar (2009) page or the 20th Century Studios listing.
