Avatar: Fire and Ash could be the last film in the franchise if it does not make enough money to justify continuing. James Cameron said the decision to make Avatar 4 and Avatar 5 depends on the business case—not simply on the success of the earlier films. The film later grossed $1.48 billion worldwide, according to Disney, but that figure alone does not confirm that the sequels are approved or profitable.
What Cameron said could stop the next films
Before Fire and Ash opened, Cameron described the continuation of the film series as a financial decision. In comments reported by The Independent from his appearance on Matt Belloni’s The Town podcast, he put the question plainly: “The question is, does it make enough money to justify doing it again?”
That makes the “one thing” in the headline the film’s ability to support another costly production. Cameron did not announce a specific box-office target, and the sources available do not disclose a profit threshold that would guarantee approval. A worldwide gross is not the same as a film’s profit, so it cannot answer that question by itself.
What happens to the story if the films stop?
Cameron also addressed the possibility that the story might not continue on screen. In the same interview, he said, “There’s one open thread. I’ll write a book!” That was a fallback for addressing a remaining story thread, not a promise to make another movie or a confirmed book announcement.

How much did Fire and Ash make?
Disney reported a worldwide gross of $1.083 billion on January 4, 2026, with $306 million domestic and $777.1 million international at that point. In a later announcement on June 10, Disney said the film had grossed $1.48 billion worldwide.
The two figures are milestones reported at different times, not competing final totals. The later number is substantial, but it still does not establish the film’s profit or settle whether the next productions are financially viable.

Are Avatar 4 and Avatar 5 confirmed?
Do not treat a large gross or a listed release window as proof that the sequels are greenlit. TheWrap reported that the dates being discussed for the fourth and fifth films—December 2029 and December 2031—were tentative. It also reported discussions about making future films shorter and less expensive. Those are reports about the status and possible production approach, not a Disney confirmation of a final schedule.
In a post-release interview with Next Best Picture, Cameron said, “I’d like to be able to do four and five if that business model still exists.” His remark connects the future of the series to whether its theatrical business model remains workable. Between production expense, film length and the returns needed to justify another installment, the decision involves more than one worldwide gross figure.
