Set five years before Rogue One, the season follows Cassian Andor as a desperate bid to survive becomes a deliberate commitment to rebellion. The essential turning points are the Aldhani payroll heist, the uprising at Narkina 5, and Maarva’s funeral on Ferrix—where Cassian frees Bix and chooses to return to Luthen.
How Cassian’s private crisis begins on Ferrix
Cassian starts the season looking for his missing sister, not trying to join a cause. His search takes him to Morlana One, where he kills two corporate security officers and becomes a fugitive. Back on Ferrix, he needs money and a way out. He asks his friend Bix Caleen to sell a stolen Imperial Starpath unit, while the droid B2EMO helps keep the plan moving. The official episode guide identifies the Starpath sale and Cassian’s childhood name, Kassa, as part of the opening story.
The sale brings Cassian into contact with Luthen Rael, a clandestine organizer looking for people and resources for the resistance. Luthen recognizes Cassian’s usefulness and gets him away from the immediate danger. Their relationship begins as a practical bargain: Cassian wants to escape, while Luthen needs someone willing to take part in a risky operation.
Why the Aldhani heist changes the conflict
Luthen recruits Cassian for a rebel team’s plan to steal the Imperial payroll at Aldhani. The operation is a turning point because it is more than a theft. It shows that scattered opponents of the Empire can coordinate an ambitious action, and the Empire responds with punitive controls that make ordinary people pay for the rebels’ success. The heist strengthens the resistance’s cause while also making life more dangerous under Imperial rule.

The Aldhani story also clarifies how different people enter the struggle. Cassian is still driven largely by survival. Maarva Andor’s resistance is rooted in the community she calls home on Ferrix. Mon Mothma works inside the Senate, secretly providing political and financial support while the risk to her finances grows. Luthen organizes resistance from the shadows, and ISB officer Dedra Meero methodically pursues signs of an emerging rebel network. These threads show the same conflict at different scales: one person’s escape, a community’s refusal to submit, and the difficult work of building a wider movement.
How Narkina 5 breaks Cassian’s old idea of freedom
After Aldhani, Cassian tries to disappear on Niamos. A chance encounter with Imperial forces leads to his arrest and an unjust sentence at Narkina 5, where prisoners manufacture components under brutal discipline. Getting out becomes a matter of survival, but the prison also exposes the Empire’s treatment of people as disposable.

Cassian and fellow prisoner Kino Loy learn that men on their floor will not be released as promised. That realization turns endurance into revolt: Kino helps lead an uprising, and the prisoners escape. Cassian gets away with Ruescott Melshi, whose later connection to Rogue One makes him an important bridge between the series and the film. In an official interview, creator and showrunner Tony Gilroy described the revolt as beginning when the prisoners understand they will never be freed.
What happens at Maarva’s funeral
By the season’s final movement, Cassian is back in the orbit of Ferrix, where the Empire’s attention and the resistance’s actions converge. Maarva has died while he is away. B2EMO, Brasso, and the Ferrix community grieve her, while Imperial agents and people connected to the rebel struggle gather around the funeral.

Maarva’s recorded message urges the people of Ferrix to resist. Played during her funeral procession, it transforms private grief into open defiance, and the gathering erupts into a riot. Brasso and Wilmon Paak fight back amid the chaos. Cassian uses the disorder to free Bix, who has been held by the Empire, then helps his friends get offworld.
Instead of using the upheaval to vanish alone, Cassian returns to Luthen. He asks the man who recruited him to take him on. That is the season’s decisive change: Cassian is no longer merely caught up in rebellion as a route to safety. He chooses to take part.

How Season 2 fits before Rogue One
Andor begins five years before Rogue One, and Season 1 covers one in-universe year. Season 2 covers the remaining four years, divided into four chapters of three episodes each, moving Cassian toward the role viewers know from the film. The Walt Disney Company’s Season 2 announcement describes that structure.
For the refresher, keep the progression in mind: Aldhani proves that organized resistance can strike the Empire; Narkina 5 teaches Cassian what the Empire does to people it has trapped; and Maarva’s funeral turns his loss and Ferrix’s anger into a choice he makes for himself. He ends Season 1 ready to join the struggle Luthen has been building.
