‘Alien: Romulus’ Review: A Horror-First Sequel That Revisits the Original

Alien: Romulus restores a horror-first survival approach and tactile creature work, but its many callbacks make the sequel feel as familiar as it does suspenseful.

Alien: Romulus does bring the franchise back toward the horror-first approach of Alien, but it leans so heavily on familiar franchise elements that its throwback appeal is also its main limitation. Fede Alvarez’s sequel follows young space colonists scavenging a derelict station, where they encounter the series’ deadly alien life form. The result is a tactile creature feature built around survival and suspense, with callbacks that can feel as conspicuous as its craft.

Does Alien: Romulus recapture the original’s horror?

More than it pursues the action-forward course of Aliens, Romulus aims for the close-quarters dread associated with the first film. Its basic setup—a small group trapped in a hostile place with a creature they cannot control—puts vulnerability and survival ahead of spectacle. That emphasis gives the sequel a clear identity within the franchise, even as its story repeatedly draws attention to what came before.

Alvarez has been explicit about that intention. “The whole point of this movie was to take back Alien to the simplicity of the beginning of the franchise, where it was, above all things, a horror movie,” he told D23. That stated goal is useful context, not proof of success: the film’s horror works best when the immediate threat and physical environment carry the scene, rather than when recognition of a familiar franchise idea does the work.

How much does it rely on familiar Alien material?

A lot. Romulus revisits recognizable imagery and franchise mechanics, so its links to earlier films are part of the viewing experience rather than incidental background. The callbacks help make it feel connected to the series, but also reduce the sense of discovery. For viewers who want a new direction, the film’s familiarity is a real trade-off; for fans who enjoy seeing the original’s horror language revived, those echoes are part of the appeal.

Alien: Romulus - Blu-ray + Digital
  • This truly terrifying sci-fi horror-thriller takes the legendary ?Alien? franchise back to its iconic roots. While scavenging the deep ends of a derelict space station, a group of young colonizers come face-to-face with the deadliest life form in the universe. Warning: Some flashing-lights scenes in this film may affect photosensitive viewers.

The story is largely standalone, but it is not detached from the wider series. It is set between Alien and Aliens, and it connects with the prequel films Prometheus and Alien: Covenant. TIME’s timeline explainer discusses specific connections and contains spoilers; the broad placement is enough to orient a first-time viewer without giving away the film’s reveals.

How does it compare with Alien and Aliens?

Film Emphasis What that means for viewers
Alien Horror and slow-burn suspense The original establishes the claustrophobic survival template that Romulus seeks to revisit.
Aliens More action and set-piece momentum Its greater action emphasis offers a different model for a franchise sequel.
Alien: Romulus Horror-first survival with familiar franchise callbacks It returns to a creature-feature mode, but leans on recognizable material rather than making novelty its defining strength.

This is a comparison of approach, not a ranking. The useful distinction is whether you want the franchise’s atmosphere of entrapment or the faster, more action-oriented rhythm associated with Aliens. Romulus is aimed more clearly at the former.

What stands out about the production?

The film’s physical craft supports its creature-feature approach. D23 reports that the production combined practical effects, animatronics and miniatures with contemporary computer-generated work, building sets and creatures for the actors to encounter. Alvarez described the mix this way: “That’s why we built everything on practical effects, animatronics, [and] miniatures for the spaceships, and combined them with the latest computer-generated work that the best companies like Industrial Light & Magic and WĒTĀ can provide.”

The practical emphasis was not an attempt to avoid visual effects altogether. The production combined physical work with digital effects, and Alvarez singled out the alien’s acidic blood as a challenge: “It’s not an easy CG thing to create. It’s like it has to be practical,” he told the Associated Press. AP also reports that he consulted creature-effects expert Alec Gillis and brought in creatives and concept artists associated with the Scott and Cameron films. Together, those choices help explain the film’s attention to tangible creature and set work without establishing that every effect is practical.

Do you need to have seen the earlier films?

The main premise is easy to grasp on its own: young colonists scavenging a derelict station encounter a deadly alien. But “largely standalone” is a better description than “independent.” The film has direct connections to earlier entries, and familiarity with the series can make those references more legible. You can follow the central survival story without knowing every installment; viewers who want to catch the franchise links will get more from knowing where it sits in the timeline.

Who is in the film, and what are the basic details?

Alien: Romulus was directed by Fede Alvarez, who co-wrote it with Rodo Sayagues. The official cast list names Cailee Spaeny, David Jonsson, Archie Renaux, Isabela Merced, Spike Fearn and Aileen Wu. 20th Century Studios lists its US release date as August 16, 2024, its rating as R and its runtime as 1 hour 59 minutes; the studio classifies it as horror, science fiction, suspense and thriller. Those are US release details, not a claim about every market’s classification or release schedule.

What is available for home viewing?

Home-release availability depends on region, date and retailer. The Japanese 20th Century Studios page lists Blu-ray and digital distribution, but that does not establish a particular retailer listing, edition, stock status or regional compatibility. In the UK, Disney announced digital retail availability beginning October 15, 2024, at listed outlets, with featurettes, a Ridley Scott–Fede Alvarez conversation, and extended and deleted scenes. Disney cautions that bonus features can vary by product and retailer, so those UK details should not be treated as a universal current offer. The studio page also carries a Hulu streaming notice; streaming catalogs can change by region and date.

Verdict

Alien: Romulus is most persuasive as a return to the series’ horror-first, creature-feature roots. Its tangible production work reinforces that approach, while its heavy dependence on recognizable franchise material limits its freshness. If you want a survival horror sequel that reconnects with the original’s mood, it is a strong fit; if you want the series to break sharply from its past, the callbacks may become the very thing that holds it back.

For context beyond the film itself, D23 reported an estimated $41.8 million domestic opening weekend in 2024. That is a historical opening-weekend estimate, not a current performance measure or a judgment of artistic quality.
