Spoilers for Alien: Earth season 1, episode 3, “Metamorphosis.” The episode’s official title is “Metamorphosis”; “To Catch a Predator” is the title of Alan Sepinwall’s recap. Episode 3 shifts the story from the crash-site rescue to Prodigy’s attempt to study the recovered creatures, ending with a disturbing experiment involving Joe’s preserved lung.
What happens in Alien: Earth episode 3?
Boy Kavalier changes the mission: Kirsh and the Lost Boys must secure the crash site and bring creatures back for study. Wendy leaves to find Joe and reaches him inside a shipping container, but the Xenomorph attacks. Joe is injured, and Wendy tries to contain the creature behind a blast door. The confrontation leaves her badly hurt too.
At the Maginot, Morrow takes control of the ship’s database and later contacts Yutani. Meanwhile, Prodigy personnel recover creatures from the wreck, including the dead Xenomorph and eggs. The recovered specimens become the focus of Kavalier’s new research operation.
Why does Kavalier put Kirsh in charge?
Kavalier appoints Kirsh to lead the research and limits the lab to synthetic beings. Curly is frustrated that Wendy has been favored over her. Kavalier suggests Curly could become his favorite by studying and demonstrating proficiency, making his personal favoritism part of the tension surrounding Prodigy’s scientific ambitions.

Wendy and Joe are brought to Prodigy. Wendy undergoes repairs and later wakes, hearing sounds that seem to draw her toward the lab. Joe receives a lung transplant, while Kavalier keeps Joe’s damaged lung in a medical vat.
What does the ending mean?
Kirsh and Curly dissect a facehugger and remove its embryo. Wendy collapses during the procedure. Kirsh then drops the embryo into Joe’s preserved damaged lung, and it burrows into the tissue. The episode ends on that image, connecting the lab’s experiment to Wendy and Joe’s family story without establishing what will happen next.
