Agatha All Along made a persuasive case that Marvel could still surprise viewers: it traded the usual superhero scale for a coven mystery, witchcraft, horror, and a prickly lead character. That makes “broke the streak of MCU misses” a defensible critical argument, not a proven verdict on Marvel’s entire run. Favorable reviews and ratings support the case; viewership is a separate and more complicated measure.
What Agatha All Along is about
Marvel Television’s series follows Agatha Harkness after WandaVision. Disney’s synopsis begins with Agatha powerless, trapped in a distorted spell until a suspicious goth Teen helps free her. The two gather a coven and set out on the Witches’ Road, a gauntlet of trials. The series premiered on Disney+ on September 18, 2024. Disney’s media kit provides the official premise and series details.
Kathryn Hahn leads as Agatha, alongside Joe Locke as Teen, Aubrey Plaza as Rio Vidal, Patti LuPone as Lilia Calderu, Sasheer Zamata as Jennifer Kale, Ali Ahn as Alice Wu-Gulliver, and Debra Jo Rupp as Sharon Davis. Jac Schaeffer created and showran the series.
Why it felt unlike a typical MCU series
A mystery built around reveals
Schaeffer called the series a “puzzle-box show,” built around mysteries, revelations, and unexpected moments. That structure gives the story a different engine from a straightforward origin or superhero-problem format: the audience is invited to keep revising what it thinks it knows about Agatha, the Teen, and the coven.

Horror and tonal experimentation
Schaeffer also said the show was darker and leaned hard into horror, an unusual direction for the MCU. Its genre identity is not just a change in mood: the Witches’ Road trials give the series a natural framework for shifting scenarios, eerie imagery, and heightened theatricality.
A different kind of Marvel protagonist
As Schaeffer noted, a WandaVision spin-off might invite expectations of the same style, but Agatha is a very different protagonist from Wanda. Hahn said she was excited to explore witches and their origins because the MCU had devoted little attention to them. That narrower focus lets the series build around an ensemble of witches rather than making the story another chapter in a broad conflict over the fate of the universe.

A coven, not just a team
Disney’s behind-the-scenes feature highlights practical effects and a story about isolated characters learning to work together. The coven gives the show an ensemble dynamic rooted in friction, trust, and shared trials. Its visual and story choices help explain why it can feel distinct while remaining connected to Marvel continuity. Disney’s feature on the series’ production discusses those choices.
What the reception says—and what it does not
Rotten Tomatoes’ Season 1 page showed an 84% Tomatometer from 218 reviews and an 82% Popcornmeter from more than 5,000 ratings when checked on October 5, 2026. Those are live aggregator snapshots, so the figures can change. The Tomatometer reflects counted critics’ reviews; the Popcornmeter reflects user ratings. Neither should be treated as a representative poll of every viewer. Rotten Tomatoes’ season page is the place to check the current figures.

Early review coverage also framed the show as relatively standalone and distinctive, with its performances and genre approach among the notable strengths. A roundup of selected reactions is evidence of how critics described the series, not proof of universal agreement. Rotten Tomatoes’ review roundup captures those early responses.
That reception supports the narrower claim that Agatha All Along was a welcome creative change for many critics and users. It cannot establish an objective list of MCU “misses,” much less prove that one series ended a measurable streak. “Broke the streak” works best as an argument about creative momentum: the show found a clear identity, committed to it, and drew a favorable response.

Critical response and viewership are different tests
Viewership does not neatly confirm or overturn the critical case. Forbes, citing Luminate estimates, described Agatha All Along both as one of 2024’s most-watched series and as one of the least-viewed MCU series to date. Those comparisons can coexist: a show may attract substantial viewing overall while drawing less than other MCU titles. The account is secondary reporting, and its underlying dataset and methodology are not established here, so it should not be treated as a definitive ranking or a direct measure of satisfaction. Forbes’ account of the Luminate comparisons makes the distinction relevant.
Critical reception, user ratings, viewing scale, and business performance answer different questions. The available evidence supports a favorable reception and a distinct creative approach; it does not establish a comprehensive business turnaround. Reliable, comparable production and performance data would be needed to make that broader case.

Is Agatha All Along worth watching?
If you want an MCU story that leans more on mystery, ensemble chemistry, witchcraft, and horror than on large-scale superhero action, the series has a strong reason to be on your list. Its connection to WandaVision gives it context, but its coven and Witches’ Road premise provide a more focused entry point than a story dependent on tracking every MCU plotline. If you prefer a conventional action-led Marvel adventure, its tonal and genre choices may be less appealing.
