Agatha All Along is a witchy, camp-forward follow-up to WandaVision that trades much of its predecessor’s sitcom-driven formal play for a mystery, a supernatural quest and the chemistry of an unruly coven. It is a worthwhile watch if Kathryn Hahn’s sly lead performance and the ensemble’s gothic fun are your draw; it is less likely to satisfy viewers chiefly hoping for another inventive television-form experiment. Its spooky mood and flirtation are part of the appeal, though neither guarantees sustained scares or explicit romance.
What is Agatha All Along about?
After the events of WandaVision, Agatha Harkness has been stripped of her powers and trapped in a distorted version of reality. A mysterious Teen helps free her, then asks her to take him onto the Witches’ Road: a legendary sequence of trials that promises a witch what she lacks. Agatha assembles a coven and sets out to reclaim her magic while confronting the mysteries of the road and her own past. Disney’s July 8, 2024 announcement named Kathryn Hahn, Joe Locke, Sasheer Zamata, Ali Ahn, Maria Dizzia, Paul Adelstein, Miles Gutierrez-Riley, Okwui Okpokwasili, Debra Jo Rupp, Patti LuPone and Aubrey Plaza among the cast, with Jac Schaeffer as showrunner and pilot director.
How does it compare with WandaVision?
The key difference is the storytelling engine. WandaVision built its identity around shifting television styles; Agatha All Along leans on a puzzle-box mystery, a road-quest structure and the friction and affection among its witches. Jac Schaeffer described it as a “puzzle-box show” with mysteries, reveals and unexpected moments in a Disney production feature. The series still plays with genre and franchise callbacks, but it is less formally novel by design: its momentum depends more on what the coven discovers and how its members interact.
That shift makes the comparison useful, but not a verdict by itself. The show works best when judged on its own terms—whether Agatha is compelling company, the ensemble has spark, and the quest keeps its mysteries moving—rather than as a contest to repeat WandaVision’s format.

What works: camp, cast chemistry and a tactile witch-world
TIME critic Judy Berman’s favorable review highlights the camp, cast, production design, genre sendups and coven, and sees the series as welcoming to female and queer viewers who may not feel at home in the broader MCU. That is the strongest case for watching: the pleasure is less about a relentlessly frightening horror story than about a distinctive ensemble inhabiting a strange, theatrical world. The witchy, gothy atmosphere gives the show a clear seasonal identity.
The production also favors practical effects and a tactile fantasy-adventure feel, rather than making every uncanny moment look weightless. Schaeffer has discussed how practical effects can shape actor performance, drawing on lessons from WandaVision’s early episodes in the same production feature. That approach suits a story built around physical trials and a coven moving through an eerie landscape.

Where it may not land: jokes, scares and the predecessor’s shadow
The response is not uniformly enthusiastic. TV Guide critic Gavia Baker-Whitelaw, reviewing the four episodes made available to critics, argues that the jokes are weak, the scares are nearly absent, and the faux-crime opening and quest feel less inventive than WandaVision. That skepticism matters if you are choosing the show specifically for comedy or horror: a Halloween-season release and spooky styling do not establish that it is consistently funny or genuinely frightening.
The two reviews point to a taste-dependent decision rather than a settled consensus. TIME finds the camp and coven appealing; TV Guide is less persuaded by the writing’s execution. If you enjoy character chemistry, knowingly theatrical genre play and open mysteries, the show has a clear case. If you need frequent sharp jokes, substantial scares or the formal surprise of WandaVision, expectations should be more modest.

Is it actually spooky or sexy?
“Spooky” is best read as atmosphere and seasonal positioning: the series is witch-centered, gothic in feel and structured around supernatural trials. The available critical assessments do not support promising a steady stream of effective scares. Likewise, “sexy” describes the charged, flirtatious chemistry between Agatha and Rio, which both TIME and TV Guide discuss, not a promise of explicit content.
Who should watch it?
- Try it if you want Kathryn Hahn at the center of a campy supernatural ensemble, enjoy coven dynamics, or like a mystery that leaves questions open as it unfolds.
- Temper expectations if the main thing you want is the formal experimentation that made WandaVision distinctive, or if your idea of spooky-season viewing requires dependable scares.
- Choose by tone: the show’s strongest selling points are its witchy atmosphere and character interplay, while the quality of its comedy and scare factor is precisely where the cited critics diverge.
