Spoilers for episodes 8 and 9. The Witches’ Road started as a story Agatha and her son Nicholas made together, then became a real place when Billy Maximoff unknowingly manifested it. Agatha dies saving Billy, returns as a ghost, and agrees to help him search for his twin, Tommy.
Was the Witches’ Road real?
Not at first. For generations, Agatha used the Road’s legend to lure witches into forming covens, then siphoned their magic. The Ballad promised a path to what a witch most wanted, but it did not lead to an existing magical road.
In the present-day story, Billy—Wanda Maximoff’s son, who lived as William Kaplan before recognizing who he was—unconsciously makes the Road real. It is dangerous, but also shaped by his imagination and abilities. Showrunner Jac Schaeffer explained that its practical, handmade appearance reflects Billy’s inexperience as a young witch: “the reason that the road and our show is practical is because Billy Maximoff is a baby witch.” TheWrap’s November 1, 2024 interview with Schaeffer discusses the choice.
The finale does not present Billy as deliberately designing every trial. His magic brings the Road into being without his conscious control; its specific details reflect his perspective.

What is the Ballad’s connection to Nicholas?
The historical scenes reveal that Agatha and Nicholas traveled together and developed the song during their time together. After Nicholas dies, Agatha sings while grieving. Another witch hears the Ballad and believes it leads to a real Road. Agatha exploits that misunderstanding, turning a song bound up with her son into bait for other witches.
The series does not establish Nicholas’s other parent, so the finale’s revelations about his bond with Agatha should not be taken as an answer to that question.

Who is Rio Vidal?
Rio is Death. Her presence around Alice shows the role she plays in the passage between life and death, while her history with Agatha makes their conflict personal: the finale reveals that they were once romantically involved.
Schaeffer described the creators’ approach as putting life and death in conversation rather than treating Death as simple destruction. She also characterized Agatha and Rio’s relationship as a love affair in which Rio can be vulnerable and does not always hold power over Agatha. Those comments describe the creators’ intentions, not a universal rule for interpreting the character. Read Schaeffer’s interview with TheWrap.

Why does Agatha die, and why does she return as a ghost?
Agatha sacrifices herself to keep Rio from taking Billy. She later appears to him as a ghost. Billy initially tries to banish her, but Agatha admits she is afraid to face Nicholas. Billy tells her Nicholas would forgive her; seeing how Billy resembles her son, Agatha accepts a role as his spirit guide.
Schaeffer said this was the character’s planned destination: “it was always the plan to have Agatha become a ghost and become Billy’s spirit guide.” TheWrap published the interview on November 1, 2024.

What does the ending mean for Billy and Tommy?

Does the finale have a post-credits scene?
No. TVLine and TheWrap report that the two-part finale has no mid-credits or post-credits scene. TVLine’s finale recap and TheWrap’s coverage address the ending.
