Whether it is worth watching depends on which part of Minecraft you want to see on screen.
What is A Minecraft Movie about?
Directed by Jared Hess, the 2025 live-action film adapts the video game rather than continuing a particular game storyline. Four misfits pass through a mysterious portal into the Overworld, a cubic world shaped by imagination and crafting. A quest gives their journey a conventional dramatic framework, while the setting supplies familiar game elements: creatures, materials, building and survival.

The ensemble stars Jason Momoa and Jack Black, alongside Emma Myers, Danielle Brooks, Sebastian Hansen and Jennifer Coolidge. Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures presented the film, with Warner Bros. as distributor. It opened internationally beginning April 2, 2025, and in North American theaters on April 4.
Do Jack Black and Jason Momoa make the movie fun?
They are the film’s strongest draw. Black’s Steve brings an exuberant, knowingly silly energy that fits a world where odd encounters and improvised invention are part of the appeal. Momoa’s Garrett provides a contrasting, larger-than-life comic presence. Their performances keep the film lively even when the story’s next step feels more obligatory than surprising.

The fun is broad rather than subtle. That suits a colorful adventure aimed in part at young viewers, though adults who want the comedy or character work to develop beyond the star performances may find the film less rewarding. GameSpot’s Chris Hayner described the adaptation as cartoony, silly and reference-heavy, and argued it works for younger audiences beginning their Minecraft journeys.
Does the film capture what makes Minecraft distinctive?
At its best, it turns the game’s basic pleasures into screen action: characters responding to the environment, gathering or using materials, building, and adapting to danger. PC Gamer’s review particularly praised moments involving construction and survival play. The cubic visual design and recognizable creatures make the Overworld legible to players without requiring the movie to retell a specific game campaign.

But Minecraft’s appeal also comes from choosing what to do without a prescribed route. The film has to give its characters a shared destination, and the portal-and-quest structure does that job at the cost of some of the game’s freedom. The world is colorful, but the plot often tells the characters where to go instead of letting discovery and making drive the adventure.
Where does the story fall short?
The quest gives the movie a clear shape, but it can feel attached to the setting rather than grown out of it. Rotten Tomatoes’ critics’ consensus likewise calls the film a colorful sandbox for Black and Momoa while describing its story as built from conventional blocks. In a more negative assessment, The Guardian’s Wendy Ide argued that the imposed quest makes the film feel cobbled together.

That gap matters most if you expect an adaptation to convey Minecraft’s creative spirit, not just display its recognizable world. The movie offers memorable game-like activity, but its central journey is more familiar than inventive. The result is not a story-free sandbox: it is a conventional adventure decorated with the game’s visual language.

- Younger Minecraft fans: The creatures, block-built world, playful action and recognizable game references offer an accessible introduction and plenty to spot.
- Families seeking a light adventure: The broad comedy and clear quest make it easy to follow, though the US rating notes action, language, rude or suggestive humor and some scary images.
- Viewers drawn to the stars: Black and Momoa provide the clearest reason to watch if their comic performances are the main attraction.
- Adults hoping for a cohesive, imaginative adaptation: The story’s conventional structure and limited sense of open-ended play may frustrate more than the visual references delight.
How long is it, and what is its rating?
The Associated Press lists a 101-minute runtime and a US PG rating for violence and action, language, suggestive or rude humor, and some scary images. Rating labels vary by territory, so check the local classification if you are watching outside the United States.
The film began its North American theatrical run on April 4, 2025. Warner Bros. Discovery announced in June 2025 that it would start streaming on Max on June 20, 2025; that past announcement does not establish current availability, which can vary by region and date.
