Alexander, the runway coach known as Miss J on America’s Next Top Model (ANTM), said he had a stroke in December 2022. He recalled spending five weeks in a coma and being unable to walk or talk when he woke. Reporting later described him as wheelchair-bound during the period covered by the documentary, while a February 2026 update from former colleague Jay Manuel said Alexander was doing daily physical therapy and could take steps.
What happened to Miss J. Alexander?
Alexander discussed the stroke in Netflix’s documentary Reality Check: Inside America’s Next Top Model and in a February 16, 2026 interview with Netflix Tudum. He said the stroke happened in December 2022; Them and TV Insider identify the date as December 27, 2022. He recalled, “I spent five weeks in a coma … I couldn’t walk, and I couldn’t talk.”
Netflix Tudum reported that Alexander spent one year and five months in hospital. In the interview, he described his health at that time as “Fine. Healing and dealing.” Those comments reflect his condition during the documentary-era interview, not a current medical assessment.
Was Miss J left paralyzed?
Accounts say Alexander could not walk when he woke from the coma and describe him as using a wheelchair during the documentary period. The reporting does not give a clinical diagnosis specifying the extent or type of paralysis, so “left paralyzed” should not be read as a more precise medical description than the sources establish.

How is Miss J recovering?
In a February 20, 2026 report, Them attributed a later update to former ANTM creative director Jay Manuel, who said Alexander was receiving physical therapy every day and could take steps. This is Manuel’s reported update, based on an Entertainment Tonight interview—not a direct clinical assessment or confirmation of Alexander’s current condition.
The two accounts refer to different points in time: during the documentary period, Alexander said he could not walk; Manuel’s later update said he could take steps. Public reporting cited here does not establish the stroke’s type or cause, further treatment details, or a prognosis.

Miss J’s story in the ANTM documentary
Alexander became widely known as ANTM’s runway coach, recognized for his critiques and encouragement. The documentary brings his stroke and recovery into the story of his life and career. Netflix Tudum reported that Reality Check: Inside America’s Next Top Model was streaming on February 16, 2026; availability may vary by region and can change.
Director Daniel Sivan emphasized that Alexander should not be defined by his health, describing him as “a diva who just shattered every single glass ceiling.” The documentary-era interview also included Alexander’s account of visits from former colleagues Jay Manuel and Nigel Barker. He said Tyra Banks had texted that she wanted to visit but had not visited as of that interview; that is his account of the situation at that time.
