The episode explains that she has gone overseas with Mercy Ships after being moved by the plight of children at an orphanage. Showrunner Rashad Raisani said the writers chose that explanation to honor Grace and actor Sierra McClain, while leaving open the possibility of Grace returning.
Where is Grace in the season-five premiere?
Grace is abroad with Mercy Ships, a humanitarian organization. In “Both Sides, Now,” Judd tells people she is “doing the Lord’s work.” The episode explains that Grace saw photographs of children at an orphanage through their church and could not stop thinking about them. She decided to go help.
Raisani told TV Guide that the ship’s port of call in the premiere is the Solomon Islands. He described Mercy Ships as bringing medical and other aid to places lacking hospitals or basic infrastructure, including services such as well digging and cleft-palate surgery. That description is Raisani’s account in the interview, not an independent update on the organization’s current work.
Why did Grace leave Judd and Austin?
The story presents Grace’s departure as an extension of her faith: she believes the mission is a calling important enough to take her away from her family and her work as a 9-1-1 operator. Raisani explained the writers’ thinking in comments reported by Us Weekly: “The only thing we could think of to justifiably pull Grace away from her family and job was an even greater calling.” He added, “And the only thing in Grace’s world that could answer that was God.”

That explains the character’s choice; it does not mean Judd has no complicated feelings about it. Raisani said love and admiration for Grace could coexist with frustration and emotions Judd might rather not acknowledge. The episode’s premise leaves him carrying family responsibilities while trying to find a new sense of purpose.
Why didn’t the show kill Grace off?
McClain did not return for season five, and the writers had to account for Grace’s absence. Raisani told TV Guide that killing Grace between seasons felt cheap and disrespectful to both the character and the actor. The creative team wanted to preserve the possibility that Grace could return. TheWrap also reported Raisani’s hope that Grace might come back if the series earned a sixth season. That was a hope, not a promise.

At the time, coverage reported that season five would be the series’ final season, so a return was uncertain. The show’s production explanation is separate from the in-story one: Grace is away on a faith-driven mission, while the writers wanted to handle McClain’s absence without ending Grace’s life onscreen.
What does Grace’s absence mean for Judd?
Raisani described Grace as Judd’s emotional and spiritual moral center. As he put it to TV Guide, “We established in the episode where Grace and Judd meet, ‘Saving Grace,’ that Judd was lost when Grace found him.” He added, “And the truth is, he is lost without Grace — and he always has been.” The writers intended the separation to expose how much Judd relied on her and to deepen his story over the season.

Her absence lands amid other changes. Judd has left the 126 to care for Wyatt after Wyatt’s accident, and Wyatt begins working at the call center. That leaves Judd separated from the firefighting job that shaped his identity as well as from Grace’s day-to-day presence. Raisani described the character as isolated; actor Jim Parrack anticipated darker coping mechanisms and called Judd’s circumstances a “dead zone” in remarks reported by TV Insider. Those are the interviewees’ interpretations and forecasts, not clinical diagnoses.
Calling the situation Judd’s “sacrifice” is a way to describe the cost he bears, not a confirmed label for the plot. The premiere shows him managing the family’s changed circumstances while Grace follows what the series frames as a spiritual calling; it does not establish that he accepts the decision without conflict.

When did season five begin?
FOX announced September 23, 2024, as the season-five premiere date. The season opened with a train derailment threatening people in Austin, while establishing Grace’s absence and the changes to Judd and Wyatt’s lives. Contemporary reports said McClain was not returning; the available reporting here does not establish the reason for her departure, so a contract dispute should not be treated as confirmed fact.
