In “Step Nine,” Amir Casey and Bobby Nash are bound by a fire that killed both their wives: Bobby caused it, and Amir has never forgiven him. The 9-1-1 episode brings the men into a dangerous situation where they must work together without resolving that history. In a May 16, 2024 interview, Malcolm-Jamal Warner explained why Amir’s anger is so personal—and how he and Peter Krause kept the characters’ hostility distinct from their off-camera respect.
How Amir is connected to Bobby
Amir, a nurse and fire survivor, lost his wife in an apartment fire Bobby caused years earlier. Bobby’s own family also died in that blaze. For Amir, the loss is not distant history: Warner pointed to Amir’s face as a daily reminder of what happened.
That history makes Amir’s anger more than a general grievance about Bobby’s past. The two men carry different losses from the same event, and Bobby’s responsibility does not disappear simply because he is also a bereaved survivor.

Amir and Bobby are forced to cooperate
Amir confronts Bobby at an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting. Later, while volunteering at a migrant encampment, Bobby finds Amir wounded. A dangerous situation leaves them needing one another to survive, but cooperation is not forgiveness: Amir does not absolve Bobby in the episode.
Bobby’s past deepens the episode
Flashbacks explore Bobby’s childhood, his difficult relationship with his alcoholic father, and events that contributed to Bobby’s later drinking. These scenes add context to Bobby’s history without erasing the harm that connects him to Amir.
What Malcolm-Jamal Warner said about Amir’s anger
Warner described the emotional cost of forgiveness in a TV Insider interview published May 16, 2024:
“Forgiveness is—that’s big, especially because of Amir’s experience and the daily reminder that Amir has every time he looks in the mirror.”

He also saw the episode as a point when Amir can no longer avoid his resentment by throwing himself into work:
“I think the big thing is Amir no longer has the opportunity to bury himself in his work to the degree that he doesn’t have to deal with his resentment and anger.”
Warner said the storyline does not end “in a neatly wrapped bow.” That fits the episode’s central tension: Amir and Bobby can face an immediate danger together while the underlying loss remains unresolved. Read Warner’s interview at TV Insider.
On-screen hostility, off-screen respect
Warner said he and Krause filmed in California’s Antelope Valley, at the beginning of the Mojave Desert. He described a useful contrast: the characters’ scenes are charged with anger, while the actors approached the work with mutual respect. That separation let the confrontation feel tense without confusing the characters’ history with the performers’ relationship.
