The Los Angeles Times obituary, published the day after his death, described the cause as an apparent heart attack based on information from his manager. That is a reported cause, not a verified medical finding.
Who was Edwin Starr?
Charles Edwin Hatcher performed as Edwin Starr and became internationally known for his forceful 1970 recording of “War,” written by Norman Whitfield and Barrett Strong. Starr had already built a career with Ric-Tic, a label Motown absorbed in 1968. Motown’s biography says “Agent Double-O Soul” reached the U.S. pop top 20 and “25 Miles” reached No. 6 on both the U.S. pop and R&B charts.
Was Edwin Starr’s version of “War” the first?
No. The Temptations recorded “War” first, for their 1970 album Psychedelic Shack. Starr’s version became the more prominent hit recording. Motown’s biography lists Starr’s single at No. 1 on the U.S. pop chart and No. 3 on the U.S. R&B chart; those rankings are attributed to Motown.
Motown also lists Starr’s album War & Peace as a 1970 release. After leaving Motown in 1975, he moved to the United Kingdom and continued recording and performing.
