How to try the reflection
You do not need a coffee shop, a particular drink, or an audience. You can imagine the meeting, meditate on it, or write privately. If you want to give the exercise a clear boundary, set a timer and approach the younger version of yourself with the kindness you would offer a friend.
- Choose a time to revisit. Pick an age or life period that comes to mind; you do not have to choose the most painful memory.
- Picture what was happening. Consider what that younger you was worried about, hoping for, or trying to understand.
- Imagine the exchange. Ask what you would say with what you know now, and what you would want to hear from them.
- Keep the tone compassionate. Focus on what they needed rather than judging them by what you know as an adult.
- Choose whether to record it. A journal entry or poem can help give the reflection shape, but keeping it entirely private—or not writing anything—is just as valid.
- Pause if it becomes too much. Stop, take a break, or return your attention to the present if the exercise feels overwhelming.

What the exercise may bring up—and when to stop
Looking back can make it easier to recognize how you have changed and to consider what your younger self needed. It can also bring up sadness, guilt, or regret, or leave you dwelling on the past instead of the present. Treat it as an optional personal reflection, not therapy: the cited coverage does not establish clinical benefits or outcomes.
In AOL’s July 15, 2026 overview, neuropsychologist Dr. Sanam Hafeez cautions, “It might cause feelings of guilt or regret, especially if someone feels they didn’t live up to their own expectations at a younger age.” Therapist Afton Turner, LPCA, offers this advice: “If it brings up sadness, reflect on what your younger self needed to hear, and tell yourself that now.” These are expert observations, not findings from a clinical study. You can stop at any point; you do not need to push through a difficult reaction or share it online.
