Watson has a strong lead and a workable medical-mystery premise, but its Sherlock Holmes inheritance does not always make the familiar case-of-the-week formula feel fresh. The series is most appealing when Morris Chestnut’s warmth carries an engaging diagnosis; its weaker scripts leave it looking like a softer, less distinctive take on House.
What is Watson about?
CBS’s Watson stars Morris Chestnut as Dr. John Watson, who leads a clinic focused on rare disorders after Sherlock Holmes’ apparent death. It transfers Holmes and Watson’s investigative partnership into medical diagnosis: a team studies baffling symptoms, weighs explanations, and works toward a solution. CBS’s official series materials documented season-two episodes airing on CBS and streaming on Paramount+; the network’s schedule lists May 3, 2026 as the series finale, so Watson is now a completed series.
Is Watson just trying to be House?
The comparison is fair, but it is best understood as a resemblance in format, not evidence that the show directly copies House. Both build episodes around difficult diagnoses and a team of younger doctors working through cases under a charismatic lead. Robert Lloyd of the Los Angeles Times called Watson “a warmer, fuzzier version of ‘House’” in his January 26, 2025 review. His central concern is that familiar procedural machinery can feel predictable when the Holmes references do not give the cases enough of their own identity.
The distinction is the source mythology. Watson is not simply a diagnostician with a team: the show begins with Sherlock’s apparent death and makes Holmes lore part of its premise. That gives the series a separate adaptation framework, but the references can feel like an added layer rather than an element that consistently deepens each medical mystery. The question is whether the Holmes connection changes how a case unfolds, or merely sits beside a conventional patient-of-the-week story.

What works—and what does not?
Morris Chestnut gives the show a reason to watch
Chestnut’s appeal is a genuine strength, not a cure for the writing. Even critical assessments identify his presence as a boost: he gives Watson warmth and authority, helping the character remain engaging when a script follows a predictable path. Rotten Tomatoes’ season-one page captures that mixed response in its displayed consensus, which points to Chestnut’s contribution while describing the Sherlock-to-medical-procedural conceit as an awkward fit. The aggregator is a snapshot of reception, not a substitute for individual reviews.
The mysteries can still be enjoyable
The format’s familiarity does not make every episode empty. The Boston Globe, in its January 23, 2025 review, also notes the long shadow cast by House and calls Watson derivative, but finds it likable and capable of delivering a good medical mystery. It also observes that the show’s lighter tone leaves room to touch on flaws and inequalities in the American healthcare system. That balance helps explain why a series can be structurally familiar yet still offer breezy episodic entertainment.

The scripts have to connect the two halves
The recurring weakness is not the existence of medical cases or Holmes references on their own; it is the uneven fit between them. The Los Angeles Times emphasizes the predictable feel of the setup, while Rotten Tomatoes’ season-one overview points to weak scripts and an uneasy blend of patient-of-the-week drama and Sherlock mythology. When a case does not make the Holmes framework feel consequential, Watson falls back on pleasures that House already made familiar.
Is Watson worth watching if you liked House?
Probably, if you want approachable diagnostic puzzles and a warmer lead more than you need a radical reinvention of the medical procedural. Chestnut provides a likable center, and the Boston Globe’s response suggests the mysteries can work on their own terms. Go in expecting a show that borrows some of House’s recognizable structure while filtering it through Holmes lore, not a series that reliably transforms that structure into something new. Viewers who most value sharp, consistently distinctive scripts may find the familiar plotting harder to overlook.

How the series stands on its own
Watson is a medical mystery with an appealing star and a recognizable literary inheritance, but those assets do not always combine into a compellingly original whole. The “wannabe House” label fits its diagnostic-team machinery and familiar case structure; it becomes too reductive if it ignores the Holmes premise, the lighter tone, or the potential appeal of an individual mystery. Its strongest case is for viewers willing to trade some originality for Chestnut’s charm and accessible episodic problem-solving.
