There is not enough verified evidence to name ten actresses who “refuse to break character.” The documented examples here are narrower: Lady Gaga said staying in character while making House of Gucci felt easier than switching in and out on set; Hilary Swank reportedly lived as a man for a month while preparing for Boys Don’t Cry. Neither account proves an actor never broke character. Natalie Portman, meanwhile, has said she has never attempted method acting.
What “staying in character” does—and does not—mean
“Method acting” is often used casually to describe immersive preparation or an actor’s choice to remain in character. Those descriptions do not, by themselves, establish a technical acting method or show that an actor literally became a role. TIME’s discussion of Isaac Butler’s The Method: How the Twentieth Century Learned to Act addresses this common confusion: TIME’s overview of the book.
That distinction matters for a title like “refuse to break character.” A report about preparation before filming is not evidence of what happened between takes, and an actor saying that staying in character felt easier does not mean she refused to leave character in every setting.
What the documented examples actually show
| Actor and production | What is reported | When and how firmly it is established |
| Lady Gaga, House of Gucci | Gaga said it would have been harder to move in and out of character on set than to stay in character. | Her account concerns working on set; the cited interviews do not establish an uninterrupted practice off set or between every take. Gaga also said this should not be sensationalized as the only way to act. |
| Hilary Swank, Boys Don’t Cry | A Guardian report says Swank lived as a man for a month while preparing for the role. | This supports a preparation detail, not a claim that she continuously remained in character during filming or between takes. The account is reported secondhand. |
| Natalie Portman | Portman said she has never attempted method acting and described it as a “luxury women can’t afford.” | A counterpoint, not an example of refusing to break character. Her ballet training for Black Swan is not evidence that she stayed in character. |
Lady Gaga: a choice while working on set
In an interview with The Irish Times, Gaga said: “It would have been harder for me to go in and out of character on set than to stay in it.” She was discussing playing Patrizia Reggiani in House of Gucci. She also cautioned against treating that choice as a sensational rule or the sole legitimate way to act. Read the Irish Times interview. Screen Daily also interviewed Gaga about the film: Screen Daily’s Gaga interview.

Hilary Swank: preparation before the role
The Guardian reports that Swank lived as a man for a month in preparation for playing a transgender man in Boys Don’t Cry. The stated duration belongs to that preparation account; it does not establish how she behaved during filming, between takes, or after work. Read The Guardian report.
Natalie Portman: a useful counterexample
The Guardian reported Portman’s comment that she had never attempted method acting and called it a “luxury women can’t afford.” The report also mentions her intensive ballet training for Black Swan, but physical preparation for a role should not be recast as proof of staying in character. Why a verified ten-actress list is not possible here
The available evidence identifies these relevant accounts but does not establish ten distinct actresses who refused to break character. Filling the remaining places with familiar anecdotes would blur different behaviors—training, research, on-set choices, and remaining in character between takes—and would risk presenting unsupported claims as fact. The reader’s natural question, “What actresses stay in character between takes?”, cannot be answered with a reliable ten-name list from these documented examples.
For background on the history and meaning of the Method, TIME points readers to Isaac Butler’s The Method: How the Twentieth Century Learned to Act. That context helps separate a specific actor’s reported working practice from the much broader label “method acting.” TIME’s discussion of Butler’s book.
