A Minecraft Movie made its world tangible without building every part of it in a studio. Director Jared Hess says the production constructed key locations—including Midport Village, mines, forests and the Woodland Mansion—as practical sets. Virtual production and computer-generated effects then extended those spaces, helping translate Minecraft’s block-based look into environments built for actors, cameras and large-scale action.
Which parts of A Minecraft Movie were built as real sets?
Director Jared Hess told The Irish Times that the crew built Midport Village, the mines, the forests and the Woodland Mansion practically. He said tangible props and the ability to perform in an actual space informed the cast’s work.
That detail matters because a physical set gives actors something to touch, move around and respond to. It also gives filmmakers real surfaces and spatial relationships to use when blocking a scene. But Hess’s description does not mean that every location, object or image visible in the finished film was physically built. The production combined practical environments with virtual locations and digital effects.
How virtual environments helped plan the film
The production’s Virtual Art Department (VAD) used models, concept art and physical-art-department materials—including set decoration, props and costumes—to develop virtual locations. According to Creative Bloq’s account from Disguise contributors, Unreal Engine environments were used from pre-production through principal photography and post-production.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
These digital spaces served as planning tools, not simply as finished scenery. Filmmakers could work out actor positions, camera movement, stage layouts and the room needed for stunts. The virtual environments could also be shared with visual-effects vendors, helping coordinate digital environments and set extensions with the physical production.
A report in VFX Voice gives further detail from Disguise’s production account: initial set designs were made in Rhinoceros 3D and then developed into navigable Unreal Engine environments. The VAD prepared models using tools including Blender, Cinema 4D or Maya, and described live-compositing the Minecraft world with Simulcam against blue curtains. Those details show how a blocky world could be visualized around performers and camera setups before every element existed as a final image.

Where practical sets, virtual production and VFX fit together
| Production layer | What it contributed |
|---|---|
| Practical sets and props | Physical locations and objects for actors to inhabit and interact with, including the locations Hess named. |
| Virtual environments | Digital versions of locations that helped plan shots, camera and actor placement, stage layouts and stunt space. |
| CG and visual effects | Digital environments, extensions and large-scale action that could be combined with practical photography. |
These were complementary parts of one workflow rather than rival ways to make the film. Physical construction gave performers tangible surroundings; virtual production helped the crew anticipate how those surroundings would work on camera; and VFX could expand the world beyond what a stage or location set could contain.
What Digital Domain says about the climactic battle
Visual-effects vendor Digital Domain says its work on the third-act battle covered more than 10 minutes of effects across 187 shots. Its case study also reports up to 500 characters on screen at a time and says the sequence combined practical blue-screen plates with fully CG shots. These are figures reported by the vendor about its own work, not independent measurements of the whole film’s effects workload.

The account illustrates why a finished scene should not be read as a simple record of what stood on set. A blue-screen plate may preserve a photographed performance or element, while CG shots and digital environments can create scale, crowds and action that were not physically present in the same way. The sources do not provide a complete inventory of which props were practical or which appeared in the final cut.
