Donald Trump was booed at several moments during the FIFA Club World Cup final on July 13, 2025, but reports also describe cheers when he arrived. The reactions varied by moment; they do not show how the crowd as a whole viewed him.
What happened at the final?
Chelsea beat Paris Saint-Germain 3–0 at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. Trump attended with First Lady Melania Trump, watched the match with FIFA President Gianni Infantino, and joined the post-match ceremony, where he handed Chelsea the trophy. The White House photo gallery also documents the Trumps’ attendance and Trump’s role in the ceremony: White House photographs of the final.
When did spectators boo Trump?
- During the national anthem: The Guardian reported booing when Trump appeared on the stadium video boards.
- At the trophy presentation: The Guardian also reported boos as Trump walked onto the field with Infantino for the trophy, awards, and runners-up medals.
- During a screen appearance: The Associated Press described “a smattering of boos” when Trump appeared briefly on the stadium’s mega-screen.
The accounts differ in which moments they describe, but both report boos. AP also said Trump and Melania Trump were greeted with cheers when they arrived, so the crowd’s reaction was not uniformly negative at every point. Associated Press coverage; The Guardian’s account.
What the crowd reaction does—and does not—establish
The reports describe reactions at particular moments; they do not provide a count of people booing or a representative measure of spectators’ political views. FIFA reported 81,118 attendees at the final, its highest attendance figure of the competition, but that attendance number is not a tally of reactions. FIFA also reported total attendance of 2.49 million across the tournament. FIFA’s attendance report.

Trump’s comments after the match
After Chelsea’s win, Trump told reporters: “It was an upset today I guess. But it was a great match,” according to the Associated Press. FIFA also quoted Trump praising Infantino and referring to football as “soccer” in the United States. These were remarks about the event, not explanations of why spectators booed.
