Yes—Henry Cavill is in The Witcher season 3, and it was his final season as Geralt of Rivia. Netflix released the eight episodes in two parts in 2023; Liam Hemsworth took over the role in season 4. Netflix’s published updates confirm the casting change but do not give a reason for Cavill’s departure.
When did The Witcher season 3 come out?
Netflix released the season in two volumes: episodes 1–5 arrived on June 29, 2023, and episodes 6–8 followed on July 27, 2023. The second volume came four weeks after the first. Netflix described season 3 as Cavill’s “final turn” as Geralt. Netflix Tudum’s season 3 announcement and TVLine’s release schedule give the dates and episode split.
| Volume | Episodes | Release date |
|---|---|---|
| Volume 1 | 1–5 | June 29, 2023 |
| Volume 2 | 6–8 | July 27, 2023 |
What happens in season 3?
The season places Ciri at the center of a struggle among monarchs, mages, and beasts seeking to capture her. Geralt takes Ciri into hiding to protect their newly reunited family, while Yennefer guides her magical training at Aretuza. The threat grows more immediate as the Continent’s competing factions close in. Cavill described the danger to Ciri as “genuine; it’s no longer theoretical — it’s practical. And it’s very, very dangerous.” Showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich called the season “the culmination of what we’ve been building toward all along.” Both remarks appear in Netflix Tudum’s season 3 coverage; neither was offered as an explanation for Cavill’s exit.
Why did Henry Cavill leave The Witcher?
Netflix’s published season 3 and season 4 announcements confirm that Cavill’s run ended after season 3 and that the role was recast, but they do not state why he left. Those sources do not establish claims about a disagreement over the books, scheduling, another role, or dissatisfaction with the adaptation, so those explanations should not be treated as confirmed.
