Joker: Folie à Deux ends by separating Arthur Fleck from the Joker persona: Arthur is fatally stabbed after he turns away from the role, while another inmate takes up its most recognizable image. The point is not that Arthur secretly was never Joker; it is that the identity can outlive the man who performed it.
What happens at the end of Joker: Folie à Deux?
-
Arthur is held at Arkham and faces trial for the crimes he committed as Joker. The legal case and public attention have made the persona inseparable from his life, even as he tries to move away from it.
-
His relationship with Lee deteriorates as he retreats from the theatrical Joker identity. In court and in the media, Arthur’s performances make the question of who he is feel increasingly unstable: the public is invested in a character, not necessarily in the person beneath it.
-
After Arthur rejects the Joker persona, a younger inmate approaches him in a prison corridor and asks for a joke. The inmate stabs him. Arthur looks toward the camera as he bleeds to death.

The killer laughs and cuts a Glasgow smile into his own face. The image shifts the Joker’s visual signature from Arthur to someone else.
Who is the real Joker at the end?
The film does not identify the killer by name or establish him as the definitive Joker of a larger continuity. What it does show is an inmate copying the Joker’s smile after Arthur has rejected the persona. That makes the scene a transfer of imagery, not a confirmation that Arthur was merely a warm-up for a particular comic-book character.

This distinction matters because “Joker” works in the film as both Arthur’s adopted performance and a role that other people can recognize, imitate, and claim. Arthur’s death closes his story; it does not erase the cultural image he helped create.
Why does Arthur die after rejecting the persona?
An Arthur-centered reading
On a personal level, the ending is a tragedy about Arthur trying to stop being the figure others want him to be. His confession and rejection of the persona deny him a clean transformation into a timeless villain. He is not rewarded with a heroic reinvention or a stable identity; he dies as a vulnerable person in custody.

A myth-centered reading
The inmate’s imitation offers a different answer to what survives. The role can be inherited even when its originator is gone. The film’s final image turns the Joker from a single person’s identity into a mask another person can adopt, with violence and spectacle traveling along with it.
What does the smile mean?
The Glasgow smile is the ending’s clearest visual handoff. Arthur’s death and the inmate’s self-mutilation occur in sequence, making the new smile look less like a private injury than a claim to the symbol Arthur leaves behind. The film does not need to announce a successor: the copied image does that work.

Todd Phillips and Joaquin Phoenix discussed the fate of Arthur and the Glasgow-smile image, according to Variety. That creator context is consistent with reading the moment as an intentional transfer of the symbol, though the meaning remains an interpretation of what the scene depicts.

It can be read that way. The film invites viewers to consider why Arthur’s violent persona became more compelling to the public than the frightened, unstable person underneath it. Once he stops performing, the attention and affection he sought do not resolve into acceptance. The inmate’s imitation suggests that the appetite for the Joker image can continue regardless.

That reading does not require treating every viewer as complicit in Arthur’s crimes. It asks a narrower question: when a story turns violence into celebrity, what exactly are audiences cheering for—and what happens when the person at the center refuses to keep entertaining them?
What the final scene leaves unresolved
-
The killer’s identity: The scene does not name the inmate or explicitly state that he becomes a specific future Joker.
-
The persona’s future: The copied smile makes imitation visible, but the film does not show what the inmate does next.
-
Arthur’s legacy: His story ends, while the meaning of the Joker image remains open to further appropriation.
