Why Driftmark’s succession becomes urgent
After a six-year jump, Corlys Velaryon is seriously injured, and his possible death puts Driftmark’s future in doubt. His brother Vaemond challenges the claim of Corlys’s grandson Lucerys, whose inheritance is central to Rhaenyra’s family and political position. The dispute is not simply about who should hold a title: it puts Rhaenys in the position of weighing family loyalties against the future of House Velaryon.
Rhaenyra tries to reach an agreement with Rhaenys before the claim is decided. The official synopsis describes the move plainly: “With the Driftmark succession suddenly critical, Rhaenyra (Emma D’Arcy) attempts to strike a bargain with Rhaenys (Eve Best).” The official episode synopsis establishes the bargain as the episode’s central political maneuver; a contemporary Washington Post recap describes Vaemond’s challenge to Lucerys and Rhaenys’s difficult choice.

Viserys brings the family together
The succession fight unfolds against a second crisis in King’s Landing: Viserys is visibly failing. His presence at the family gathering gives the dinner unusual weight. For a moment, the relatives set aside their hostility and share a meal, and Viserys can see the unity he has wanted for his house.
That truce is fragile rather than a resolution. The claims and resentments that brought the family into conflict remain, even while the dinner offers a glimpse of what reconciliation might look like. Rotten Tomatoes describes the gathering as a short-lived truce; the episode’s Rotten Tomatoes page also highlights Paddy Considine’s performance as the ailing king.

The episode closes with Viserys dead. His death turns the family’s unresolved disputes into an immediate dynastic crisis: the monarch who has tried to keep the Targaryens together is gone, while the challenge over Driftmark has already exposed the fractures within the wider family.
That is what gives the dinner its tragic force. It is not proof that the feud has ended, nor does the episode establish it as a lasting reconciliation. Seen beside Viserys’s death, the meal reads as a brief, hard-won glimpse of unity just before the family loses the person who might have kept it within reach. The political question of who inherits Driftmark and the personal question of whether this family can remain one are left bound together.
